“one hit of an opioid can cause permanent changes to the brain, and anyone who takes opioids (including the prescription opioids) is at risk of addiction.”

Citation?

It doesn’t seem likely as millions have walked away. Just like millions have walked away from alcohol.

Even a one-day opioid prescription carried a 6 percent risk of use at one year later and a 2.9 percent risk of use at three years later.

This obviously is not the case for most people - but the fact that a certain percentage of people stay on opioids after one day of use is pretty clear evidence that addictions can form after a single use. And of those who don't continue, there's probably a minor addiction and withdrawal symptoms which they need to deal with.

Of course some people can wean themselves away from opioids (and alcohol). But the addiction is there, and must be overcome, even for those people. Other addicts are never able to walk away.
