Experts say a long resolution to pipeline cyberattack could hit consumers' wallets

ATLANTA - Days after an Alpharetta-based energy company reported a ransomware attack and halted its operations amid an investigation, it's still unclear how consumers will be affected and if a fuel shortage on the East Coast is imminent.

Colonial Pipeline moves gasoline, diesel, jet fuel and home heating oil from refineries primarily located on the Gulf Coast through pipelines running from Texas to New Jersey.

It is a major supplier of fuel and delivers an estimated 45% of all fuel consumed on the East Coast.

The Georgia-based company said it transports more than 100 million gallons of fuel daily, through a pipeline system spanning more than 5,500 miles.

This cyber terrorism will cause a temporary shortage of fuel in the East Coast as motorists scramble to fill their tanks.

Is anyone seeing long lines at gasoline stations on the East Coast?

Didnt they ever backup their data to tape? Cloud? FLOPPIES???

If my office got hit, we would lose at most a few hours of data, and a few hours more to reinstall Windows 10 and biz apps.

Well, they can drive to Texas if they need gas. Not a problem here. LOL.

Anyway, they’ll now get a TASTE of the future with our commitment to cut way back on ‘greenhouse gasses’. Hard to think of a better way to ‘introduce’ them to what they voted for than what’s about to happen to them.

[and no, of course I don’t want fellow FReepers to suffer, no more than you wanted us Texans to suffer in our freeze, so take this as a ‘collective’ posting to the 60% plus people in that part of the country who think Trump sucks, not to the conservatives trapped up there]

I can’t believe they can’t find some of these hackers and pay them a visit.

I went out to top off after hearing about it around noon yesterday. Just at normal Saturday at the pumps then.

No, but this just happened, so it’s more likely a trickle-down effect.

No long lines here but we did fill all of our tanks yesterday. I was sort of shocked there wasn’t and assumed that many folks aren’t either watching the news OR the media hasn’t whipped up a panic frenzy.

Well, that’s parallel with the “lessons” from COVID hysteria.

But it also kind of offsets. While there are plenty cars back on the road, COVID still has cut down on how much people go out - and thus, travel. So, maybe the pipeline costs won’t seem so obvious.

Of course, maybe this goes hand in hand with the plan to use RR instead of the midwest pipeline that Biden cut off.

RR is the next best thing, except possibly huge freighter ships for the coast.

They probably hired a hacker and are now Ustinov as an excuse to raise prices.
Why didn’t they make sure they had proper security in the first place?
This is the company’s responsibility!

Good point. But I guess the fine folks at the FBI are just too busy tracking down “domestic terrorists” - you know, people who once bought a Confederate flag on EBay.

CIA did it. Deep State attack to ruin our lives.

Could it be? Yep they would do that.

How can they search when the attack tracks back to themselves?

I'm suspending judgement until I know more.

When I was a part of MSNBC's IT team (as a contractor) we took a major hit when a virus tore through the server that held all of our artwork. It turned out that one of the graphic designers, who was using a Mac ("We don't need anti-virus software cuz they're so inherently safe") had a mapped network drive and, although her machine wasn't affected we lost some 60,000 images.

I also had a reporter doing research on a story about cyber-viruses and collected a bunch of them - which he conveniently saved onto a network file server.

The unanswered question with this story is if Operations equipment was breached or just Operators computers. Shyt happens and it's one thing of someone's work PC gets compromised. It's inexcusable for Operations equipment to be breached. They're supposed to be "Air-gapped" - physically separated from the Internet.

(A little history and a warning) as to cyber attacks...no town or city or state is safe from cyber attacks. While this threat is ongoing, the news is about getting rid of the word Mother as in "Happy Mother's Day!

NO to WOKE or anything close to it. NO to BLM, antifa, the cancel culture NO to anything that doesn't say I AM PROUD OF AMERICA, MY COUNTRY.

Not seeing lines yet, but my favorite discount gas station went dry yesterday - the other stations around it began raising prices since their main competitor is out of gas.
