Like the drummer for Spinal Tap, the No. 3 in GOP leadership does not usually last long

Anyone who wants to succeed Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) in leadership should be careful what they wish for, because her current post is traditionally a dead end.

No Republican has ascended directly upward in leadership ranks since Rep. Dick Armey (R-Tex.), after a brief stint as conference chairman, did so more than 26 years ago following a wave election that swept the GOP into the House majority.

Oh, NOW it's not all that important a position and doesn't lead anywhere, eh??

We'll then why was Cheney thrust into this leadership position after only one term in Congress? Because they wanted to get her in line for the Speakership, that's why.

Remember, her dad was in line to be Speaker. He was House minority whip. Then the democrats decided to go after John Tower for drinking too much, so Dick Cheney replaced him as nominee for Secretary of Defense, opening up the Whip position. And who took it? Newt Gingrich, who led the conservative revolution (Washington hated that).

So once again we have foiled their plans. They wanted Eric Cantor to be Speaker. He was removed bodily. Now Liz Cheney is going to be out on her ass.

We're not supposed to have such power to remove these annointed leaders. But we do.
