Count hubby and me in the 30% of ppl over 65 who aren’t vaccinated. Maybe we’ll reconsider after the human trials are over.
I don’t do vaccines-flu, shingles, pneumonia, etc because of bad reactions since childhood-but I had the Wuhan virus-a mild case-13 months ago when we were all running around in masks for supposedly slowing the spread-so much for wearing masks-I used a homeopathic remedy to get rid of it-no mask and nothing since, so I’m thinking I’m one of those over 65 who have some immunity...
It doesn’t appear that a lot of the vax enthusiasts are counting those of us who have already gotten the Wuhan as being immune and contributing to herd immunity, even though I know more people who had it and recovered like I did than people who have gotten the vaccine-never mind that it makes little sense to be vaccinated for something you have already had-why take the chance on screwing up a well-maintained, proven immune system by forcing it to go into overdrive...

That J+J pause may have been a mistake. Though it’s encouraging they would catch and react to a problem so early - when it was only little more than a one-in-a-million possibility.

As of the last report, 83.3% of those Americans 65 or older have now had at least a first shot.
So you and the honey are among the remaining 16.7%.
The trials were big and thorough. Since then, more than a quarter of a billion doses have been administered, in the USA alone. The actual data is in - in monumental fashion. These vaccines are safe and effective.
It is hard to get a good count of those who have already had COVID.
The 10% of the population who tested positive are easy, but how many with symptoms were not tested? How many were infected, but had no symptoms? How many have not been exposed to COVID-19, but have cross-immunity from other corona viruses?
Estimates, including some from authoritative sources like the CDC, put those with natural (i.e. non-vaccine induced) immunity in the range of 100 to 200 million Americans.
Within two months after infection, circulating antibodies against COVID-19 mostly drop below the sensitivity of the test, so estimates have to made by other means. CDC has been conducting a National Seroprevalence Survey, in conjunction with commercial blood testing companies like LabCorp. Blood drawn for other tests have also been sampled for COVID antibody testing. They even sample sewage, to estimate the COVID viral load (true story).
The bottom line is that your point about those who have natural immunity contributing significantly to herd immunity, is well appreciated by those professionals who measure and predict the disease spread. It is a huge component.
An important characteristic of immunity through natural spread, is that it disproportionally effects the high contact people, who are most apt to spread the disease - taxi drivers, cashiers, food service people and such. Those people play a bigger role than average, in the herd immunity effect of reducing the transmission rate, when they develop immunity.
Vaccines on the other hand, can be (and have been) targeted at the most vulnerable, who play a disproportionate role in the Public Health concerns of mortality and hospital utilization.
Currently, vaccines make a bigger daily contribution to growing herd immunity. We are running around a million new first shots per day, but only about 50,000 new cases per day (plus perhaps 2 to 4 times as many infections not confirmed by testing).
So we are steadily banking another 2-3% of the population per week developing new immunity. On top of already large percentages. I think we should be on the verge of seeing a collapse in new cases, over the next month or two.
Another consideration though, is that there is overlap between those who have been exposed to the disease already, and those who have been vaccinated. We can’t just add those two numbers together, because many who were infected (knowingly or unknowingly), have also gotten vaccinated.
Still however, it should be soon...
Maybe the increase that we are seeing, is the recovery of public confidence in the vaccines, after the public relations debacle of the J&J pause (which mrsmith’s link above illustrates so clearly).
The exact same issue as AstraZeneca in Europe, and they knew both that it was meritless, and that it would be a disaster for vaccination timelines. They did it anyway. I think the net result will be some thousands of lives lost, that would have been saved through earlier vaccination.
These vaccines are safe and effective.

But if they were healthy and decided to get the experimental shot then died from the experimental shot, its no biggie because lives are just a percentage point.
