Florida Gov. DeSantis to Offer $1K Bonuses to Police Officers, Firefighters

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) says that unlike other states trying to defund their police departments, he is offering bonuses to every police officer, firefighter, paramedic, and emergency medical technician (EMT) in the state.

During a press conference on Wednesday, DeSantis announced that as part of the state’s budget that he will sign into law, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and EMTs in Florida will each receive a $1,000 bonus following a year of unrest spurred by the Chinese coronavirus and anti-law enforcement riots.

the recognition that when the coronavirus pandemic hit, you had some people — and I don’t begrudge them for doing this — but you had some people working … they would just work on Zoom from their bedroom or from their living room.

Well the people that wear the uniform, they didn’t have that luxury. They were out there every single day, our police, our fire, our EMTs and they had to work more than they ever have, not just to deal with protecting us when the pandemic hit but then obviously how police were treated last year was a total disgrace and they had to put the uniform

DeSantis said the money paying for the $1,000 bonuses derives from the American Rescue Plan passed by Congress that gives states relief funding, which they can then use as they wish.

Along with the first responder bonuses, DeSantis signed legislation last month that increases penalties against rioters to deter riots in the state and provisions that prevent localities from defunding their police departments.

This really seems wasteful. I am as pro police as can be(LEO myself), but most of these guys make good money get a pension and make tons of overtime. A thousand dollar bonus seems unnecessary.

Yeah. A thousand bucks is barely a week’s take-home, or thereabouts?

It’s a 2% raise on the year. It’s kind of insulting, really. Make it $10,000 and now we’re talking.

They make enough money as it is.

How about reducing debt or improving existing things.

“This really seems wasteful”

You don’t live here, right? Well I do, and have cop buddies, and they are definitely underpaid. We’re not a union state where they make a fortune. Do your homework.

Starting pay for Volusia County Deputies is around $43,000, iirc. That’s $21/ hr. And it’s half of what they deserve, imo.

See post #9.

People who don’t live here, nor know cops here, should do their homework before telling us what’s good and not. Stay in WI, please, and leave us alone.

“They make enough money as it is.”

No, they don’t. I live here; you obviously don’t. See post #9.

I have several cops living within 5 blocks of me. They all have the tiniest houses in the neighborhood. Cops in Florida do not get paid much. That $1000 will come in very handy.

And the state has good fiscal discipline for a reason. Just tossing out numbers you don’t know what would do to our budget is really stupid. That goes for all the armchair governors here on this thread. Desantis hit it out of the park on this, and you guys throw rocks. What a bunch.

But the salary numbers don’t include the value of their health benefits and pensions.

I’m not saying cops get a decent salary.

I’m saying they get unsustainable bennies.

No I don’t live in FL and I don’t know what the pay is for a local cop. I assume a cop from a small town makes a lot less than a state trooper. That being said even though their salary is 43,000 I guarantee that they work a good bit of overtime and most cops work as security off duty.

Once again I support the police and work in law enforcement myself however this is another example of tax payer money being spent when it is not necessary to do so. Everyone complains about government spending right up until the government hands them money. if money is going to be wasted I would rather it be given to first responders but it really should not be spent in the first place.
