Oversight Board upholds Trump's Facebook suspension

Facebook's independent Oversight Board has ruled in favor of upholding the platform's suspension of former President Donald Trump's account.

Why it matters: The decision sets a global precedent for how Facebook, and potentially other social media companies, will treat political leaders around the world.

The big picture: Facebook, like Twitter, barred Trump for violating its rules in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, then referred the case to the board. While Twitter was President Trump's chief online megaphone, Facebook was his most effective fundraising tool.

Catch up quick: Facebook established and funded the Oversight Board to provide independent review when users appeal the company's content moderation decisions. Facebook has pledged to follow the board's recommendations with regard to specific cases and to give consideration to the board's broader policy recommendations.

Meanwhile, Twitter has shown no indication that it plans to review or reverse its decision to ban Trump, nor have other online platforms that took action against him after Jan. 6.

Why anybody continues to give power to these two entities is a mystery to me.

Good.

Hope all ≈ 71+ million that voted for Trump immediately cancel their Facebook accounts, if they haven’t already.

The only thing these corporations understand is their bottom line.

Never been on FB or Twitland. Not interested in people on there saying stuff like, “I am making chicken salad sandwich.” But here? Come here every day. Don’t post much but read much. Makes me think.

I am with you. I was afraid they wouldn’t continue the ban. If they let him back on, they would have a measure of control over him. As it stands, he will create his own social media and will bury them in the ashes of history..along with Twitter. The current social media in particular, and the major media are drunk with the power that they think they have forever. History is littered with those who thought their power was forever. As it says in the Bible, Proverbs 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.

“ Facebook established and funded the Oversight Board to provide independent review…”

Zuck assumes, probably correctly, that most people won’t understand that phrase. Employees are very likely to agree with the boss’ decisions if it means keeping their jobs.
