Facebook created the Oversight Board a year ago to make final calls on the most difficult decisions the social network makes about what users can post. Each case is decided by 5 members of the 20-person board. They consider Facebook's rules and international human rights principles and seek out the views of outside experts and members of the public. In the Trump case, the board received more than 9,000 public comments. The final decision must be approved by a majority of the full board, and Facebook has agreed to abide by its ruling.
The Trump case is the biggest test so far of the board's legitimacy: whether it's seen as independent from the company that created and funds it, or whether it's seen as a cover to let Facebook duck responsibility.

I know it’s hard for many to comprehend, but Facebook and Twitter are not public utilities.
You can walk way from both with no ill effects. I did.
Those sites are very popular, yes, but the public is in no way limited to them. They are not “the internet” in any way.
Your telecom company may be a public utility insofar as they are the ones with a monopoly on the public lien on property to pay the wire/fiber bringing internet service to your home, akin to public roads. Facebook and Twitter are akin to the regional mall that lots of people shop & lounge at, but which in no way is a “public utility”.
I hope they “reinstate” him, and he says “FU, I’ll go my own way”!
If Facebook/Twitter let Trump return, they’re laying grounds for him to sue over libelous treatment: letting him back questions whether the ban was appropriate, a decision they are responsible for.
Trump could charge them a fee for his presence and donate the money as school vouchers.
It’s done. He isn’t coming back and FB has belatedly realized that it means that they have forfeited their political leverage, their self-proclaimed status as arbiters of political discourse. Trump was gold and they threw it away because they’d flattered themselves that they’re something they’re not.
Facebook showed their hand. They've shown that they're not on our side. So we'll have to go elsewhere. Hopefully Trump will start his own social media platform and we can all "hang out" with him. Facebook lost all those MAGA peeps so that's on them. I doubt that they care that much regardless.
Did you see the “human rights” lawyers who made the decision. LOL, I’m sure they were unanimous in upholding the ban, total woke freaks.
