It’s more complicated. Most members of the SS Glacian division were from Galicia. Galcia was not majority Ruthenian and Ukranian (43%). Rather Poles were a slight plurality (46%). Another 10% were Jewish, although Jews were a plurality in some cities and towns. The Soviets stole Western Galicia in 1939 and annexed it mostly to Ukraine, with portions going to Belarus. When the Germans invaded, they worked with Ukrainians to subjugated Poles, and murder Jews and the Polish intelligentsia. Ironically, in 1945, the conquering Soviets ethnically cleansed most surviving Poles and Jews.
Interesting, 10% of the SS Galician division were Jews— wow, how they must have been pushed into joining.
And later the Soviets purged all of them, Jews, Poles and Belarusans- which is not surprising when looking at the spectrum of Socialism to Communism being ALL Leftist and thus anti-Jews, anti-Poles and anti-Belarus (anything that stood in the way of the re-control of that area of the Ukraine under Soviet Russia.
A point usually overlooked about the Nazi Germans-— they were Socialists who were, on the Socialist Leftist spectrum in competition with the majority of post WWI out of work labor in Weimar, who were the German Communist Party (leftover from the Bolsheviks whom the Kaiser sponsored, with Lenin, who removed the Romanovs and the Kerensky Socialist run Duma in Russia— to create Lenin/Stalin Soviets).
So, the Socialist Nazis who were welcomed in the Ukraine vs. the Holodomor monsters of Stalin/NKVD etc.— recruited Jews, Poles Belarusans to fight the Communist Soviet Russians, and the Nazis lost, and the Soviets wiped out all who were left and also got Churchill and Stalin to “give up” Allied prisoners which included the Anti-Communist Don Cossacks who had joined the nazis. Done at Yalta— American witnesses to this deliberate tragedy, escorted the POWs to the Russian border where they were immediately executed, in sight of the Americans— Don Cossack White Russian leaders- cavalry Generals Pyotr Krasnov and Andrei Shkuro were executed.
Documented well as the Cossack Betrayal, and by the author Nikolai Tolstoy in “Victims of Yalta”— and done by FDR and Churchill to “not offend and to keep peace with Stalin”-— who was already working on “entering the war” against Japan.
