A hammer-wielding attacker told an Asian woman to remove her mask and then bashed the victim in the head in Manhattan on Sunday night, police said.
The 31-year-old victim was on 42nd Street near Ninth Avenue when an unknown woman approached around 8:45 p.m.
“Take off your mask,” the unknown woman told the victim, according to police.
She then hit the victim with a hammer, causing lacerations to the head.
The victim, who was hospitalized, is not likely to die, officials said.
NYPD investigators said they were looking into the incident as a bias crime.
The attack came on the same day as a rally in Queens to end hate against Asians.
Police said the attacker was last seen wearing black jeans and a black shirt. She fled eastbound on 42nd Street.

New York City could use a woman like this on every street corner, to hit every mask wearing zombie over the head with a hammer. Especially college educated White liberals. A flail would be even better!
I know damn well that woman is NOT Leslie Jones the loud, lewd comidianne, but Boy, do they look alike if you only take a quick glance.
My more serious take is incidents like this only live up to the stereotype of blacks always being violent and dangerous.

That's an odd comment. I saw the woman interviewed on the news. She's got a nasty gash on her head, but she's otherwise OK.
She said the attacker was arguing with walls and yelling random things before she attacked her. She's your typical strung out mental patient that we used to lock up for everybody's safety.
Now, we are more compassionate so we leave them roaming about with hammers.

No, people should be able to decide whether or not they want to wear a mask, although I despise masks in general. Asians seem to be more likely to wear masks when they’re sick, long before COVID19.
Those who want to force us to wear mask, otoh, could use a bop on the head from a thick U.S. history book.
