Queens’ District Attorney John Santucci reopened the Son of Sam case in 1979 after concluding that Berkowitz did not act alone: “I believe David Berkowitz did not act alone— that in fact others did cooperate, aid and abet him in the commission of these crimes.”
Among other things, Santucci pointed out “the sketches of the individuals—the composites—were at wide divergence from Berkowitz.” And indeed, they were. In fact, the sketches were “at wide divergence” from one another; as the New York Post noted, “the identikit drawings of the NYPD, which some say are better than photographs, give seven different looks to the killer.” Santucci also noted, as did the Post, that “an unusual number of people” who were connected to the case, and who were identified by Berkowitz as being complicit in the crimes, “are no longer living.”
