Special plane and the NEST crews are absolutely needed - moving nukes is not like moving regular bombs - how would ordinary people know if the nukes are still stable? or leaking radiation and what to do about that. All personnel involved in any sort of nuke operations are specially trained.
Regardless of the bravado (... we are the USA. We do not need Turkey’s permission), we actually do need permission. It has been that way since we established bases there in the 50s - when I was there we had some specialized antennas but could not use them as the Turks had not been informed - we were told any attempt to mount them would result in Turkish artillery shelling and front line troops storming the base. That has not changed.
In fact, during the revolt a few years back their military ringed the air base because they were sure some people on it were aiding the rebels. We narrowly voided disaster then. This is a far more fragile situation.
And yet we flew a live nuclear cruise missile across the USofA thinking it was a practice load.
Look it up.
And with all this from our lovely NATO partner, if there are actually still nukes there that get seized - then there are some folks here that allowed this and need body parts mounted on pikes.
