I doubt that it was lurking under their car in anticipation of them bringing out a cat in a carrier. It had apparently attacked a neighbor, earlier.

Yeah. Bobcat can be hit or miss as pets. Some are on a hair-trigger for going nuts. I had a ‘possum that was fairly amusing. Not much danger of her lunging across the room.
