The Express, UK has some photos of the area:
Boone = far left North Carolina college town...avoid like the plague.
Lot of meth, and meth-related arrests out of the region as well.
Sounds more like “Two Deputies Shot, Resulting in a Standoff.”
Damn! I’ve never been there myself, but my ancestors settled that area (Boone, Triplett, Cooks Corner) in 1774 (thereabouts). Family cemetery is there, too. I should visit someday...

As the top employer in Boone, North Carolina, Appalachian State University provides intellectual opportunities for students and residents. The University is home to the Appalachian Energy Center, the Math and Science Education Center, and The Human Performance Lab. The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts is the largest visual arts center in the area. Boone is a hot spot for bluegrass music and Appalachian story telling. Boone is a town in and the county seat of Watauga County, North Carolina, United States. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, Boone is the home of Appalachian State University and the headquarters for the disaster and medical relief organization Samaritan's Purse. The population was 17,122 at the 2010 census. The town is named for famous American pioneer and explorer Daniel Boone, and every summer, other than 2020, from 1952 has hosted an outdoor amphitheatre drama, Horn in the West, portraying the British settlement of the area during the American Revolutionary War and featuring the contributions of its namesake. It is the largest community and the economic hub of the seven-county region of Western North Carolina known as the High Country.
“....the Sheriff’s Office responded to a call for a welfare check along Hardaman Circle in Boone because the homeowner and his family did not attend work recently or respond to telephone calls.
Deputies proceeded to enter the home after discovering all vehicles belonging to the residents were on the property. Upon entering the home, deputies received gunfire from an unknown individual within the residence. Two deputies were struck by the gunfire....”
Sounds like they went there, saw the vehicles, knocked and with no reply - entered the home.
“Family” and the way it went down I’ll bet they report more bodies found - murder and death by cops.
Another day in the lives of our police.
One of my young’uns graduated from App. I shot a few games of pool with former Chancellor Peacock one Parents Weekend. Great guy, nice town. Wouldn’t live there, way too cold in the winter. But a beautiful place, nonetheless.
“wellness check?”
Because he didn’t go to work and did not answer the phone?
Oh yeah, while your there, why not have a peak inside? Standard procedure?
Maybe they wanted to leave a care package, a basket of goodies—some apples, cheese, a bottle of grape juice and a get-well card.
How many hours do cops wait before issuing a missing persons report?
Something about this seems—off.

Boone is the hub for outdoor recreation in the northern mountains of NC. Skiing, national forests, Parkway, fishing are minutes away.
Being a small town the smelly hippy/New Age/ANTIFA/dreadlock crowd is minute compared to Asheville 2 hours away.
Not a bad place for a weekend. Not much do in the immediate town but the surroundings are excellent.
Somebody posted it was near Aho

Since they built the Convocation Center, you sit around and watch it flood. I lived in the apartments across the street one summer. The girl I lived with a house downtown there now.
Boone has the worst traffic in all of Appalachia and they have worked hard to keep it that way
“Lot of meth, and meth-related arrests out of the region as well.”
I’m going to go with off his psych meds. That seems to be a recurring theme.
