Mathisen said, “I really agree with you on that, because you see ads and you see banners at stores and whether it is Bed Bath & Beyond, or a Target or a local restaurant, or a big national chain like yours, people are looking for workers. Do you attribute most of that inability to attract workers to the ideas that workers are receiving and riding on unemployment benefits?”
Fertitta said, “One hundred percent. It is the extra $300 a week. When I first said this on CNBC a few weeks ago. Everybody looked at me like I was crazy, and then they all realized that this is what’s happening. There is no employees out there. We are offering bonuses everywhere. At the same time, my casinos are having record-breaking months, okay. That’s stimulus, guys. That’s where your money is going. It’s going out there to all of your high-end department stores, your Louis Vuittons, your Chanels, all your high-end steakhouses, all your high-end hotels. In the last week, I have traveled to Philly, to New York to L.A., and I see what is going out there, and it’s not just Houston. People are spending money everywhere.”
Mathisen said, “I think I’m hearing you say we do not have an employment recession in the country, number one. Number two, the extended unemployment benefits, well-intentioned though they may be is actually retarding a full recovery.”
Fertitta said, “One-hundred percent. What’s happening now — you’re getting ready to have huge inflation for the consumer because the people in the slaughterhouses, the people raising the chickens, the people raising your produce, they can’t find employees, so they can only produce so much, so what happens? They raise the price to the consumer businesses like mine, which is retail, which is restaurants, which is hotels,

Will Fertita be canceled for telling the truth?
Well, if it pays more, why not? Government workers, teachers especially, are getting paid to stay home and do no work, is it not a surprise that lowest paid workers, given the opportunity to make more money unemployed, are choosing to do so?
Great for kids ....there getting hired the first interview...the kids near me are all working..unless they would rather be on the devises
That’s part of the truth.
The other part is businesses laid off their workers.
American would be workers are tanking, not unlike Fertitta‘s Houston Rockets.
Not paying rent with no fear of being evicted is the other aspect of this new math.
Yea and I have been facing a crippling and excruciating neurological disease since 2018 and I cannot get any help at all. *SPIT*
Absolutely correct. Not only is the unemployment money free of having to work but there is no hidden costs in getting it. They don’t have to put gas in the tank to get to the job, find someone to watch the kids, etc.
Well duh. Of course they are staying home. It pays better. That was a stupid thing to do in the first place, to provide better unemployment than working wages PLUS huge benefits PLUS make the provision that you no longer have to look for work or take a job as in normal unemployment.
People around here call it the covidcation and it has been going on now for over a year. They are working but not for wages IF they want to. Side gigs for cash.
It’s simple Econ 101: if you subsidize something you’ll get more of it. We’re subsidizing indolence and irresponsibility.

I just read that in our little community the county has 20 unfilled jobs and has not received a job application in over a month.
That is human nature.
Solzhenitsyn wrote that collectivism fails to consider human psychology in their economic models.
Sorry to hear of your health issues.
Have you applied for disability?
To get into the game of extended benefits, an initial job is the cost of entry.

Any reasonably smart person would take the FREE MONEY gig. For many, It’s a bigger and better deal. Get paid to do nothing.
Why Not?
Some are playing it real smart- Take the free cash - take the free time to LEARN something else - BANK the free cash and make some more in lots of other ways - pile it into stocks - . . . BUY property, replace money making tools, LEARN NEW SKILLS - get their teeth fixed - , , ,
the options are endless
The “work from home” is more like Loaf From Home from what I see.
Weekday slack times used to be the exclusive province of retirees and such at places like Sam’s. Now you see couples and families going out for a lark.
“I just read that in our little community the county has 20 unfilled jobs and has not received a job application in over a month.
