I hear you! His worst endorsement was that arse Mitt Romney in 2018. But I will cut Trump some slack because his first instinct is to try to get along with people.
That's not necessarily a bad thing in the real world, but in the bubble of the political sewer, it can be.

Trump gave Mitt Romney the benefit of doubt. I don’t think Trump understood the type of scum he was dealing with.

Another limit on Trump was Mitch McConnell, who had an effective veto over any appointment that needed Senate approval. Trump might have been fooled with regard to Sessions, who was an early supporter of his, but Barr, Sessions and the three supposed conservatives placed on the Supreme Court could have moved forward only with McConnell's support. I am not saying that Trump's judgment of people was perfect, but you have to take the leverage McConnell had into account.
