That’s discriminating against women though. Not many women go through life with the same name they had on their birth certificate!
And if all they had for documentation was church baptism and marriage, then they’re s.o.l.
Happened to my mother in law; she never was able to get an ID, (albeit a non driving/state ID one) in the new state to which we relocated her.
I had to schmooze anyone that wanted ID, such as the bank manager (” ok now, where is she going to deposit her social security check? how is she going to write a check to pay the landlord?”. They accepted her old ID from the other state).
