The Washington, D.C., police department said Monday that its computer network was breached, and a Russian-speaking ransomware syndicate claimed to have stolen sensitive data, including on informants, that it threatened to share with local criminal gangs unless police paid an unspecified ransom.
The cybercriminals posted screenshots on their dark web site supporting their claim to have stolen more than 250 gigabytes of data.
The District of Columbia's Metropolitan Police Department said in a statement that it had asked the FBI to investigate the “unauthorized access.” There was no indication that any police operations were affected, and the department did not immediately say whether it had been hit by ransomware.

This just happened to a law firm I’m familiar with and (surprise surprise) the FBI says they can do NOTHING. They are a castrated bunch when it comes to defending us. The firm will pay $1m or more and be lucky to get their data back.

Remember when that movie studio was hacked, purportedly by the North Koreans or their proxies over the film making fun of their leader? It was an act of industrial sabotage. FBI/Obama Admin did nothing.
Well, what do you expect them to do? There’s no way to “fix” a ransomware attack unless you have good backups, or pay the ransom, and the perps are all out of the USA, so the FBI has no jurisdiction.
They are very good at tactical raids on the homes of non-violent people who offer to turn themselves in, covering up political corruption, turning a blind eye to inconvenient exculpatory evidence, blackmailing political leaders... those sorts of things.
That's harsh. Consider for example, that they will track you to the ends of the earth if you find an eagle feather and don't turn it in. That's dedication.
