A while back, FORBES wrote a very long article about the Pearl River Delta Region. I believe that the rather contained area at the Pearl River estuary just north of Hong Kong and Macao now has a population of ~68 million people. I couldn’t find the article today

The area defined as the Pearl River Delta Region is the 13th largest economy in the world.

In my view the CCP actions in Hong Kong were an attempt to stop the relative freedoms in Hong Kong and perhaps Macao from spreading into the whole region. I suspect the CCP was too late in the action

The delta and it’s millions living the good life are a mortal threat to the CCP

LOL. it’s hard to keep up with all the name changes.

Peking became Beijing
Bombay became Mumbai
Ceylon became Sri Lanka
Burma became Myanmar
Congo became Zaire but is now Congo again, I believe?
Basutoland became Lesotho

I’m sure there are others , where we could look at old maps, and see old outdated place names.

Even Old New York was once New Amsterdam.

Seven of the top ten is a shock. The sheer concentration of economic power is more than I expected, at least.

The city of Guangzhou may be more familiar to you as Canton …
The name “Canton” actually comes from Portuguese Cantão, which was in turn probably influenced by the Hakka Kóng-tûng; this is usually the name of the province.

To people familiar with Postal Romanization, the city Guangzhou would be known as Kwangchow and the province as Kwangtung.

In Mandarin, an airport is called fēijīchǎng (literally “flying machine field”) but is usually shortened to jīchǎng, so the airport in question is really the world’s busiest “machine field”.

Peking to Beijing isn’t actually a name change, but a switch in transliteration. Same with most of the rest of them, but one thing I cannot imagine is . . .

I agree. It’s a great airport. I think the people complaining had one bad experience and forever marked it as bad.

It’s really an amazing terminal and beautiful at Christmas time with live music and beautiful decorations.

General Tso’s chicken 左宗棠雞 (pronounced [tswò]) is a sweet deep-fried chicken dish that is served in North American Chinese restaurants invented by the Taiwan-based Hunan cuisine chef Peng Chang-kuei. The dish is named after Zuo Zongtang (also romanized Tso Tsung-t’ang), a Qing dynasty statesman and military leader, although there is no recorded connection to him nor is the dish known in Hunan, Zuo’s home province.[2]

General Tso had nothing to do with General Tso's Chicken?

Next they will tell us that Moses did not invent mosaics.
