Sen. Joe Manchin Backs ‘Targeted’ Infrastructure Bill, Opposes Reconciliation

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said on April 25 he would support passing a smaller infrastructure bill with bipartisan support, appearing to oppose the scope of President Joe Biden’s plan.

In an interview with CNN, the Democratic senator said that he prefers a “more targeted” measure that would incorporate broadband internet, roads, and other traditional infrastructure needs. When asked if he would back another bill with other related spending via a Senate process called reconciliation, he replied "No".

“I’m not a roadblock at all. The best politics is good government. I can’t believe that people believe that if you just do it my way, that will give us the momentum to get through the next election,” Manchin told CNN. “We won’t give this system a chance to work. I’m not going to be part of blowing up this Senate of ours, or basically this democracy of ours, or the Republic that we have.”

In the divided 50–50 Senate, Manchin—whose state overwhelmingly favored former President Donald Trump over Biden during the 2020 election—is seen as a key swing vote. He previously balked at Democrats’ plans to eliminate the 60-vote filibuster that’s designed to protect the rights of the minority party.

Manchin praised the GOP’s smaller, more targeted counterproposal to Biden’s infrastructure plan.

“That’s a good start. It really is and I’m glad they did it because it came out of the [Committee on Environment and Public Works] which has [Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.)] as chairman, and my colleague [Sen. Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.)] is basically the ranking member,” he said. “They worked it together so we know it has bipartisan support, we just have to look to see if we’ve gotten everything in there that we need.”

Last week, Manchin appeared to disagree with what constitutes “infrastructure,” as Biden’s administration and some top Democrats have tried to shift the meaning of the term away from facilities and structures such as buildings, roads, bridges, water pipes, and power supplies required to organize a society.

If Manchin continues like this, all ‘iffy’ about Bid Dem Goals, expect someone like AOC to ask him:
“So Joe, just how much is Donald Trump paying you to gum up the works for everybody here? Is it a ‘Huge’ sum?”

“The best politics is good government.”

Then we have the worst possible politics because we certainly have the worst possible government.

RE: “So Joe, just how much is Donald Trump paying you to gum up the works for everybody here? Is it a ‘Huge’ sum?”

Manchin’s answer to AOC should be: “Let’s exchange notes. First, You tell me how much the Chinese Communist Party are paying you to ruin our economy.”

Biden thinks "infrastructure" is promoting transgender she-males and midnight basketball and free stuff for illegal aliens. That is Biden's "infrastructure".

Manchin is a rat of rats BUT I would still love it if he would switch parties for no other reason then to break the dems hold on power.

It would be a HUGE defeat for the dems. yeah we’ll have 5 or 6 worthless RINO’s that we can always count on to stab us in the back, but just getting the senate out of dem hands would be a massive win.

When it comes time to vote Manchin will vote a straight Dem ticket exactly as Schumer instructs him to.

Trust me this is still better - imagine the last 3 months had the Stupid Party not squandered the two Georgia seats. It would be daily doses of Mittens and Susie Tom Collins and Lisa Moocowski pleading for “unity” with CCP Joe. Here instead we see the Fascist Rat agenda dying on the vine except for 2 reconciliation bills that won’t hold up in popularity from now until November 22.

Manchin is a political animal, who votes purely according to where he is in the election cycle.

He voted to confirm Kavenaugh because that was right before the 2018 Midterms.

Once he was safely re-elected, he voted to impeach Trump (both times). WV went for Trump big time. There's no way he would have voted to impeach if it had come before the 2018 Midterm.

The idiot republicans in WV have never run a strong candidate against Manchin. The guy they had in 2012 looked downright creepy -- reminded me of Truman Capote. Here's hoping Trump himself will recruit a decent conservative to run against him in 2024.

In the meantime, don't trust anything Manchin says.

I hear where you are coming from —just let everyone keep there cards exposed instead of hiding them.

but the fascist agenda aint dying on the vine—its spreading like kudzu and Americans are quickly getting force fed a poopie sandwich.

the Republicans suffer from the Palestinian stupidity syndrome. The Palis always failed to miss opportunities to better their predicament by working with the Israelis and the Repubs always fail to put the nail in the democrat coffin.

if i want to positive, I can say that 8 years of Obama gave us The Donald, so maybe 4 years of Biden/Harris will give us something better. who knows.
