I taught at an urban black Catholic school. Broke up a few fist fights — was easy by creating a distraction. But a knife fight? No friggin way, this woman is an idiot.

One of my colleagues, a black male math teacher (a rarity) came to our school after teaching in the public system. Told me, “It’s so nice not to have my life threatened every day now.”

And when you aren’t mentally ready to do it, it sure does eat at you as a kid.

I was picked on, too, as a kid. Those early experiences taught me a lot.

But, yes, some kids can be pushed too far. Some kids in our schoolyard would taunt a boy who walked by every day, until one day the boy came into the schoolyard and pulled a knife on one of them. No one was hurt. He wanted to scare them, and it worked. I don't remember if the police were called, but we didn't see that boy again.

All I hear is, “Let black kids kill one another. It’s none of your business.”

Someone hearing him: "A tough life. Were you a maximum security prison guard?"

"No, math teacher."

"Scary stuff. Glad you made it out of there in one piece."
