2nd degree murder carries a 40 year sentence. A quick internet search shows that Minnesota does not have parole, but an offender has to serve 2/3 of his or her sentence, which can be adjusted upward or downward based on state sentencing guidelines. As Chauvin went inside this afternoon, he is looking at spending 9,741 days as a guest of the state of Minnesota, with a release date in December, 2047, and then supervised release for the rest of the 40 year term.
I can’t see this judge giving Chauvin any less than the maximum.
