It's been a while since I looked, but I'm pretty sure the civil rights movement and mob justice weren't actually on the same side of things. Some might even go so far as to say the whole point of the civil rights movement was actually a reaction to crowds of people taking justice into their own hands and intimidating the equal application of the law... coincidentally while wearing masks to hide the identities of the vigilantes and mob participants.
