LONG BEACH, Calif. - Two Kroger grocery stores in Long Beach are set permanently close on April 17 due to mandated raises, also known as the "hero pay" ordinance that was implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier this year, Long Beach became the first city in Southern California to pass the ordinance, which requires grocery store workers to be paid an additional $4 an hour.

My son lives there and told me about this. Government involved in private sector business which they usually know nothing about usually ends badly.

I’m guessing these stores were looking for a reason to close, this became a convenient reason.

Yup—grocery stores run on very thin margins.

It does not take that much merchandise disappearing out the back door before they are losing operations.

Mandated $8,000 a year raise

Why only grocers?

Why not gas stations/convenience stores?

Why not offices that require employees on site while 95% of the staff telecommutes and saved gas money?

Amazon will ship it.

Why isn’t Amazon having to pay their stockers and delivery drivers this money?

I escaped CA in 1979. IIRC Long Beach, had lots of stores.
(I grew up in the Bellflower, Paramount area) Things must have really changed to cause “Food Desert” concerns. All the smart people must have followed me out of the state.
Mi casa es su casa, by government decree, perhaps is the problem?

This is a good example, of what happens when government imposes unreasonable mandates on businesses. Here we see they decide to shut down rather than comply with the unreasonable law.

So Long Beach loses the jobs and residents lose their supermarket.

The media will, probably spin this as Kroger being greedy, that they could afford to pay this higher rate, etc.

Food 4 Less, a Hispanic oriented grocery store, is located in north Long Beach. That area has never been a great neighborhood.

The Ralphs on Los Coyotes Diagonal has been underperforming for years, per my realtor friends who live nearby. That was stated in the story. Plenty of other grocery stores nearby.

Keep patronizing Amazon. They are using the money you pay them on ways to kill you. just as Hollywood does. Keep giving your money to Amazon. As Lenin said. “A Capitalist will sell you the rope to hang him with if he can make a profit on it.”

Except these bums then get paid constantly out of the treasury. Now they are considering a 4th stimulus payment. GMAFB. Meanwhile, my refund from actual work as in my money is still “being processed”.

If these hypocrites really believe in “hero pay”, pay the “heroes” out of the municipal budget.

Last year unemployed people were making even more than these “heroes”.

I guess the real “heroes” stayed home and sheltered in placed.
