I was too young at the time to comprehend, but understand that Walter Cronkite did broadcasts from Vietnam, in which he told the audience that the war was lost and hopeless.
One of the key events was the Tet offensive of 1968. As I recall, we and the South Vietnamese actually, militarily, successfully fought off the Tet offensive. But that event was portrayed in the media as a major North Vietnamese victory.
I have to refresh my memory of all of that, but, I do recall that LBJ supposedly said he had lost “middle America” if he lost “the most trusted man in America”, Walter Cronkite, as to how the Vietnam War was going.
The media have a lot of power to shape perceptions of events.
