I remember the good Old days when one on the reasons kids joined the military was to get educational benefits from the VA after they leave the service. Guess thats all forgotten now-a-days.
Low income people who need their student loans forgiven???
I thought the only reason to even go to college was to get an education that could make you more money.
Perhaps the criteria should be “WHAT MAJOR DID THESE PEOPLE HAVE”???
A major in “Women's Studies” & Basket Weaving” & Middle Ages dietary arts would all be grounds for denial of any loan ‘forgiveness’ IMO.
I paid EVERY penny of my college costs out of my pocket.
When Obama took office and Democrats controlled the government , there was a huge increase in student loan fraud.
A lot of the student debt in default does not even rise to the level of dead beat students refusing to pay for their worthless Women's or Black studies identity politics degree
It consists of totally unqualified, largely uneducated people, many of whom are favored “minorities” who took out student loans to bogus and fly by night “trade schools” or “beauty schools” who were basically student loan money laundering mills . Many of the students never even attended classes or even intended to re pay the loans. They just took the money, gave the “schools” their cut and then ran.
Think of it as back door reparations .
A substantial number of the outstanding loans in default are fraudulent loans to phantom students who don't even exist. The money here is just plain government graft and corruption theft by politically connected grifters.
The Democrats in Congress are fully aware of this because they are complicit in the scams. They want to forgive the debt to hide where the money went and who it went to. The fraud and abuse of the student loan system under Obama was bad - really bad and our pols want to hide this from the American public by "forgiving" the fraudulent loans

I was sure as s#1t low income when I was an E-2/E-3 and paid off my student loans way back in ‘73. Can I get a refund on that one?
Yep, and repossess the degree, license, title etc.

Originally it was lawyers with Porsche cars, million dollar houses, etc. who caused educational debt to be considered special and not relieved by bankruptcy. I’m all for it if the degree is repossessed along with any associated license and title. A lot of these needy clowns spent 5-6 years getting an undergraduate degree partying the whole time and not working a lick. Then it’s off to graduate school for another 2-5 years on the borrowed money.
This is big government. I had to pay mine.

There are no restrictions on how the student spends their federal loan money.

“Low income” students already get a ton free that I couldn’t get in college. Pell grants and added freebies from colleges make those who feign being poor look legitimate.
I will never forget an afternoon talk I has with two roommates who had quit work and got 100% of everything free. They got food from Food Stamps and the local Food Bank and all their tuition and board were covered. They got Welfare and Medicaid, too.
They asked me why I hadn’t done the same.
“Heard some national “conservative” host this morning (on a program I don’t listen to, on a station that I do listen to for the local programs).
Anyway this national syndicated host was still insisting that Mitt Romney IS a conservative. NOPE”
