Like the Amazon workers in Bessemer, they were evidently satisfied with current wages and benefits and felt that union dues wouldn't be worth paying.

Few people realize the other part of it.

Unions mean that slacker over there would make the same wage as me despite the fact I am busting my hump and he is playing on his phone.

And they couldn't fire him.

And if he was hired a single day before me he would be promoted over me.

That would fricking SUCK!

So I will take my chances that my diligence will be noted and rewarded under this system then move to one where it would not.

This is inaccurate. Prior to the 20th century, the Progressives called themselves “reformers” and were disparate movements that did not coordinate outside of state boundaries very often.

Progressivism is a 20th century phenomena.

One of the most and perhaps *the* most prominent work of progressivism early in its life was Herbert Croly’s very influential work “The Promise of American Life”.

It was published in 1909.

Early progressives were often against what this nation was founded to be. They wanted a central government with general power to do all the things they wanted done.

We should have sent the lot to France and taken the few Frenchmen who preferred the wisdom of our founding.

Looking back that seems to have merit, but at the time I doubt we would have deported our own president. Especially considering how popular America’s first progressive president was and still is with most Americans in general and conservatives in particular.
