In addition to what you’ve written is the fact that Crimea was historically part of Russia, not Ukraine until Khrushchev gifted it to Ukraine in the 50s. Since, at the time, the transfer took place between two parts of the ‘eternal’ USSR, it didn’t really mean much. Similar to Nevada gaining territory from both the New Mexico and Utah territories. I believe the majority of Crimean residents were Russian and there was of course the question of the port for the Russian Black Sea fleet.

Certainly in light of events, Ukraine was stupid to exchange its nuclear arsenal, for a promise made by Bill Clinton.
