For 12 years, business journalist Jim Campbell has interviewed members of Bernie Madoff’s family and exchanged letters with the fraudster himself in prison. His new book, “Madoff Talks,” comes out in two weeks. Here, Campbell reveals some of what he learned about the notorious case.

“Jim, I have no problem with what you have laid out,” Bernie Madoff wrote to me from prison, in exquisite cursive, about my request for an interview. “I must add that both Andy and Ruth felt good about your sincerity.”

I never imagined becoming pen pals with perhaps the most vilified person on the planet. Nor did I expect to end up with more than 400 pages of communications with Bernie Madoff, including e-mails and some multi-page, single-spaced handwritten letters, which always rationalized in tremendous detail his every illicit move.

Reminds me of my extensive correspondence with Reichsrüstungsminister Albert Speer during his 20-year incarceration by the Allies in Spandau (after his conviction at the Nürnberg War Crimes Trials).

Pages and pages of meticulous, narrow handwriting. Complaints about the prison food. Recounting at length his nightly dreams (some of which involved his former boss). Dotted his i's with little hearts.

As Kojak used to sardonically say, "Charming!"

Madoff cultivated government access through donations to Democrats----- must have figured he'd need them someday.

From 1991 to 2008, Bernie and Ruth Madoff contributed:
<><> about $240,000 to federal candidates, parties, and committees,
<><> $25,000 a year from 2005 through 2008 to Democrats.
<><> Democrat Senator Charles E. Schumer got almost $30,000 from Madoff and his relatives.
<><> Biden pal Democrat Sen Chris Dodd was a Madoff recipient.

The Democrat Committee returned $100,000 of the Madoffs' contributions to Irving Picard, the bankruptcy trustee who oversees all claims; Senator Charles E. Schumer returned almost $30,000 received from Madoff and his relatives to the trustee. Senator Christopher J. Dodd donated $1,500 to the Elie Wiesel Foundation for Humanity, a Madoff victim.[51]

I’m perusing my copy of Speer’s memoirs... No credits to said Freeper.... I thought for sure, a twenty year pen pal would have gotten some good stuff... Anyways Speer’s memoirs are interesting.
