I'd like to take a rational look at the confrontations among cops, motorists, and pedestrians.
When we see incidents of cops shooting blacks (which are the only shootings the media cover), one thing becomes clear: resisting arrest often ends up with a loss of life. Something else is obvious: when a cop is the one losing his life, it's practically overlooked by the media.
When a police officer, whether during a traffic stop or a street stop, is making an arrest, the person being arrested has no right to resist. If that person believes it's an unlawful arrest, he can make that argument at the station house or in a courtroom. However, let's be clear about this: the cop has the legal authority to make the arrest, simply based on the penal law.
Moreover, once the officer has uttered the words "you're under arrest," the only right that person has, under the law, is to submit to said arrest. Furthermore, the only right the cop has, under the law, is to follow through with the arrest of someone who has broken the law. What benefit to society would occur if cops were to just walk away when someone defies lawful authority? Should cops arrest only those who come along willingly?
People don't like getting arrested. In addition, if they already have a criminal record, they are likely to be facing some prison time. That might cause them to panic and react violently. But the officer who stopped them may not know about their criminal past. Hence, his life may be in danger from someone facing a long prison sentence.

All the modern-day black martyrs were lowlife criminals. Pathetic and revealing.
Different Bob Weir.
Hey! That young black stand-up comedian said it best; “How to Not Get Your @$$ kicked By The POlice”. Chris Rock, maybe?
Of course the writer has a rational argument, but it tickles my funny bone to see him spilling all that ink trying to make it, like someone who thinks a foreigner can understand his language if only he enunciates it slowly and precisely.
While 10/10 times it’s better and healthier to do what is being requested, in some places resisting isn’t against the law...The biggest issue one has is, you’re going to jail either way where you’ll make your case and take a chance.
However, one is much better off just doing what is asked and fighting the case in court instead of on the street.

Paying attention to the dozen or so incidents that the media and Dems are focused on to divide the country over race with lies, I see one common thread.
ALL of the Blacks resisted arrest in one way shape, form or matter. All of them. Every single one of them. So when they are taught, or say they are all taught how to handle an arrest, either they are teaching the wrong curriculum or they aren't learning.
1. Be calm and polite.2. Do not make any quick or suspicious moves.
3. Do not allow the policeman to feel threatened IN ANY WAY!
4. Do whatever the policeman asks.
5. Get a white friend. ;)
“...the cop has the legal authority to make the arrest, simply based on the penal law...”
And THAT is where the educational system in the US failed young people. What’s worse, the media glorifies defiance of authority so that people think it’s just like TV !!! You can challenge a police officer and walk away, like you saw some BS Hollywood celeb get away with??? NOT
> the person being arrested has no right to resist <
Well, okay. But that’s not what the current debate is about. The current debate is about the level of force that was used to affect certain arrests. Given that the author is a veteran NYPD cop, I wish he would have touched on that issue.
The Cop should not have fired the gun. She was in no danger of being attacked. They could have called other cops to warn them that a fugitive was trying to escape. That’s how I see it.
There was a police officer who saw me make the illegal turn and pulled me over. I explained the situation and asked him how I could have done it legally. He started three times, realizing each route had problems. He finally said, I don't think I can give you an easy route. Have a good conference.
The key is - when stopped - have your license ready and treat the officer nicely.
A typical example was a big fat drunk guy at a casino who decided it was a good idea to get in the faces of tribal police who were trying to arrest his friend for being drunk, obnoxious and having warrants. They handcuffed his hands behind his back and left him face down in a corner where he suffocated. When we arrived they hadn't taken off the handcuffs and several officers were trying to do some form of Cop CPR.
From my experience when you see the police taking turns doing mouth to mouth on a handcuffed big fat guy, it is pretty obvious that they have done something that is more than a little questionable. I assumed that we would all end up testifying in court. Fortunately for the tribal police not even the guy's low life partner in crime cared enough about him to make a stink. He had a history of confrontations with authorities and it finally caught up with him.
I disagree. A person who just pulled himself away from a cop trying to handcuff him and started to drive his running car off is a danger to the public and the police on scene.
“The Cop should not have fired the gun.”
She very obviously DID NOT INTEND to shoot her gun. Cops should carry batons instead of tasers and be trained to use them. Looks bad, but works and no one ever tried to shoot a baton.
Perhaps the biggest thing? Cops need regular training, and that means MORE MONEY spent on cops. Not less.
“Different Bob Weir.”
Hard to imagine the REAL Bob Weir supporting the ‘pigs’ as that bunch sees them.
The point is, the situation shouldn’t escalate to the point where the gun should have been fired.
RE: A person who just pulled himself away from a cop trying to handcuff him and started to drive his running car off is a danger to the public and the police on scene.
How was that a danger to this police on the scene? He was driving AWAY!
I agree that he would have been a danger to the public, but firing the gun would also have been a danger to the public.
In my view, they should have called for additional support. They know the plate number. He would eventually be caught.
