Three GOP senators announced that they are sponsoring a bill that aims to abolish Major League Baseball’s (MLB) unique antitrust exemption.
Sens. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), and Mike Lee (R-Utah) are moving forward with the measure as a response to the MLB’s decision to move their All-Star Game out of Georgia in protest to the voting reform bill that was signed into law by Republican Governor Brian Kemp.
The voter reforms require photo ID for absentee voting, mandatory dropbox security, and expands early voting dates, among other measures.
“If they’re gonna play partisan enforcer, they shouldn’t expect to see special goodies from Washington when they are dishonestly acting to favor one party against the other,” Cruz told reporters on April 13.
Cruz explained that MLB has special subsidies and enjoys a monopoly of the sports league, unlike other major leagues.
The MLB’s anti-trust exemption restricts other leagues from emerging and competing with them and is the only league that benefits from a 1922 Supreme Court decision that they are treated as a sport rather than a business.
“This was not about voting. This was about virtue signaling and this was about punishment,” said Cruz. “Major League Baseball made the decision that the more than half of its fans who happen to be Republicans are now disfavored, and that voting voter fraud is not a concern legislature should focus on.”
“Major League Baseball is behaving with arrogance,” said Cruz. “It’s the arrogance of a monopolist, it’s the arrogance that they’re counting on the fact that their fans have nowhere to go,” he added.

Of course, any and all legislation submitted by the right is DOA in both houses of Congress.
MLB owners may be laughing now, but then they’ll realize that the house and senate may be controlled by Rs in short time. oh-oh.
They have no damn business politicking and this may serve as a nice refresher/reminder.
Lee probably wants to replace them all with Indians (dot, not feather)
Time to stop using public funds for all these sports stadiums.
Screw professional sports.
It’s pretty clear to everyone that Democrats will run the show from here on out if future elections work like the last one.
More “stunt” legislation going nowhere. A Cruz specialty.
Just keep in mind that Obamacare didn’t get rescinded when both houses were controlled by Republicans and the White House had a Republican.
Just sayin, wish that could be a guarantee.
What elections. That was no election - it was a fraud crime.
How should he do it differently?
The Ministry of Propaganda sure has been trying hard to browbeat every R guest into saying it was a clean election.
Many of them do.
We have to stop re-electing Assistant Democrats.
Way past time
Refuse to watch them. Maybe i’ll watch a new competitor some day. Avoiding
MLB.com but just checked to see if they made any mention of the anti-trust matter
and their site is ignoring the real news. Not another penny from / merchandise or
paying for games on net. Killed off cable. Gonna need the money to make up for
how much is being stolen by Joe Stolen’s bandits.
I left MLB for a much more exciting sport, where they keep their politics to themselves:
Time to hit sport leagues with antitrust... You want to get into politics, you might lose owners...
Maybe. If the Democrats don't support this, they will then have the pleasure of explaining why they support a monopoly.
IMHO, Whether you believe the fear is justified or not, FOC (Fear of Covid) will put a huge damper any new stadium plans, large building plans and financing for a long time since we will all be socially distancing and wearing masks for the foreseeable future in most states. Our collective psyche has been seriously damaged. Like renting a space or working in a tall building after 9/11 no one will want to do that for a while.
Like after the Great Depression all of those who never trusted banks again this is going to be a generational problem.
Who is going to want to spend mucho bucks on something that might be locked down for any duration for any reason in the future? A guaranteed financial loss.
In a way it will be Schadenfreude to the woke sports that supported the extreme lockdowns and went political. They will lose millions just trying to get just half the people back into the stadiums after everyone has been scared to death by COVID justified or unjustified.
I never saw this before. Pretty cool.
Of course, no guarantees, but does MLB want to gamble? They’re not the national pastime any longer.
Yes, I doubt it will come to pass, but I don’t doubt they’ll stay out of politics.
I’ve a young nephew that’s into it. The commentator’s a grin.
