The 1st amendment protects the right of the people to a free press, that is, the right of the people to publish. Not just the New York Times or CNN, but all of us. That means that anyone can publish their opinions, not just accredited graduates from J-schools.
As is shown from this story, physically destroying the machine known as the printing press is how to stop publication of thought. They can disappear the people as much as they can, but if the machine remains so does the ability of ideas to spread.
Over here, they are trying to do it digitally by banning people from from Facebook and Twitter, and deplatforming any conservatives who become popular.
