Democrats confront fragile majorities as Congress returns with big plans

Democrats' narrow edge is poised to get even narrower this week when Congress returns from a two-week recess with big ambitions to bolster infrastructure spending, expand the safety net and confirm more of President Joe Biden's nominees.

Last week, Democratic Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida died at 84. This week, Republican Rep.-elect Julia Letlow of Louisiana is expected to be sworn in, cutting Democrats' edge to 218-212. That means Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., could afford to lose no more than two Democratic votes to pass a bill without Republican support.

The 50-50 split in the Senate is already as slim as it gets, testing Democrats' resolve to stick together against unified Republican opposition to most of Biden's agenda, including the sweeping $2 trillion infrastructure package he rolled out March 31.

Gosh, Democrats have to negotiate. That’s gotta be galling.

The only insurance policy Biden has, because when they remove him there will be no tie breaking VP.

Well, if Biden were no longer there, VP Kamala would become president and then nominate a replacement VP. The replacement VP would be a Democrat.

Hmm, how does that work? I know some Presidents never nominated one when a vacancy situation occurred..

Yup. It’s not like there is a shortage of corrupt Democrats to fill the slots.

Doesn't the nominee have to be confirmed? I'd wonder how that would work with a 50-50 Senate in theory, but in practice I know Romney and Collins would bend in a heartbeat, although leaving the office vacant would prevent the VP tiebreaker.

Kind of scary when a total nut job like Cory is actually more conservative than Heels.

That’s only 430. What about the other 5?

I heard someone say the other day there are vacant seats but I don’t know why they are vacant.

Do you know?

If the GOP sticks together, there will be no VP confirmed, the senate will be split 50/50 and no more crazy democrat legislation passed. But of course, the feckless Republicans would not do this.

If Booker from NJ was made VP, Murphy would appoint the new senator from NJ. You don’t want Murphy appointing anyone.

That is a very good possibility.
I am thinking Jill Biden as it matches their frequently used strategy of promoting family members when they don’t want anyone voting.

No, I am not saying I want him to be VP, it is my prediction that is who they would pick.

He checks all the boxes

Dims, and the RINOs that love them, are mostly interested in looting tax payers than actually doing anything worth while.

It is only since the 25th amendment was passed that a replacement VP is nominated. A replacement VP was not an option in the past, such as when Johnson became president after the JFK assassination. The law to fill the VP vacancy didn’t yet exist when LBJ became president.
