4th of July Weekend, 1978 Memphis. Fireman's Riots I was doing drill with the AR at the old Yellow Fever Hospital just South of the Hernando DeSoto Bridge with a group of rag tag reservists. I was there just for the Summer as I was taking classes at Memphis State U. I was only out of active duty, a hard striper E-6 and was spit and polish. The CO asked if I wanted to ride with the NG just for show that weekend as they were terribly short handed trying to handle the actions of the natives. The NG wasn't armed but the troopers that I accompanied had live rounds hidden away for their M-16's. The Diddunuffins they apprehended were taken to a location near Orange Mound where they were unceremoniously thrown into the Mississippi River. The current there just pushed them to the steep bank where it was difficult to climb the bank speedily. I watched about a dozen of Diddunuffins treated in that manner and I don't believe any of them were repeat offenders.

It is too bad that this method of discouragement isn't promoted and accepted in riot control.
