OTTAWA — The National Advisory Committee on Immunization is standing by its emergency recommendation to extend timing of second doses of COVID-19 vaccines up to four months after the first, but says most Canadians will probably only wait half that long.
The panel is also keeping an eye on the latest reports, released Wednesday in Europe and the United Kingdom, on Oxford-AstraZeneca’s vaccine and the risk of blood clots.
“We made the decision out of an abundance of caution, while further investigations were ongoing,” said Dr. Shelley Deeks, the vice-chair of NACI. “So we will now look at the new data.”
More than six million Canadians have now received at least one vaccine dose and the vaccination rate is accelerating as more deliveries arrive.
Quach-Thanh said NACI still believes it is going to be better to delay second doses up to four months, instead of three or four weeks, so more people can get a first dose faster. But she said she also think that wait will be cut to between two and 2.5 months as more doses are shipped.
Pfizer was tested as a two-dose vaccine given three weeks apart, and Moderna and AstraZeneca two doses, given four weeks apart.
On March 3 NACI issued a “rapid response statement” urging provinces and territories to expand that to up to four months to get more Canadians covered with one dose faster.
Deeks said the panel looked at clinical trials, “real-world evidence” of the vaccines in the general population, lab data and modelling that showed a single dose could significantly reduce deaths and hospitalizations from COVID-19. Vaccine science also typically shows immune responses improve if the wait between doses is longer, she said.

“If the tests were flawed, shouldn’t we relook at those numbers?

The CDC provisionally lists 345,000 as COVID deaths based on what was listed as primary cause of death on death certificates. That 500,000+ figure was based on the early guidance from Dr. Birk’s panel to list covid as the cause of death if someone tested positive for COVID even if the primary cause of death was something else.
And speaking of numbers VAERS reports 2,794 “after vax deaths” (increasing at about 300 per week.) And 233,000+ “adverse events” (increasing at about 28,000 per week.) Historic numbers “by a country mile.”
CDC has revised their vax recommendation page to advise patients who have an allergic response to the first vax within the first 4 hours to NOT take the second.
The NIH has just announced they have begun a study to investigate allergic and mast cell conditions among the vaxed. These government studies are only done when they have recognized an issue.
You didn’t answer the question.
If you took a test and the test was flawed or inaccurate how can you count the results of such tests?
All those should be thrown out. Lets see all test results compared to death certificates.
Sorry, “You” should be “They”.
Panel❓❓
Do No Harm. The individual decides that❗❗
Oh, I agree with you, of course. I was commenting on the oft repeated statement that there had been 500,000+ deaths from covid. I was pointing out that even the CDC doesn’t claim that. Their 345,000 number was using death certificates.
And, of course, even the inventor of the PCR didn’t think you could use that test alone to diagnose covid. And using the typical 35+ cycles invalidated the results even more.
