Ukraine's military on Friday said it would not launch an offensive against pro-Russia separatists controlling two regions in the country's east, as fears grow of a major escalation in the long-running conflict.
"The liberation of the temporarily occupied territories by force will inevitably lead to the death of a large number of civilians and casualties among the military, which is unacceptable for Ukraine," Ruslan Khomchak, chief of the general staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, said in a statement.
The Russian buildup has become the latest point of friction in icy relations between Moscow and US President Joe Biden's administration, adding to disputes over arms control, human rights and other issues.
Biden last week expressed "unwavering support" for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in his confrontation with Russia, which in 2014 annexed the Crimea peninsula and backed separatists who seized large parts of the eastern Donbas region.

Looks like Biden’s “unwavering support” wasn’t very reassuring.
Trump and the white hats sent Zelensky a message. Don’t get sucked into the CIA/EU vortex.
This is capitulation by Ukraine.
It’s the only move they have.

Russia would never use nukes against Ukraine.
Nor is it even close to necessary. The regular Russian army would roll right over the Ukrainians with very little effort. Ukraine’s only play is to stop trying to provoke a fight.
Russia doesn’t need to use nukes to seize Ukraine —and they know it. Looks like the “Support” the USA offered wasn’t enough. Maybe after talking to Biden on the phone, the Ukrainians changed their minds on their little war plans.
16,000 out of 19,000 Ukrainian troops in Crimea defected to Russia in 2014.
And it was a time when Ukraine still resembled a country and paid semi-decent allowance.
The war in Donbas on part of the government was prosecuted by Nazi militias like Azov.
Now Ukraine is a failed state, I have no idea who in the sane mind is going to fight for them.
Look at both Russian and Polish borders. There are literally hordes of draft dodgers.
Dictators Saakashvili said the same thing in Georgia in 2008 before the all out offensive in Osetia.
Pick off their snipers one by one.
