When I was in basic training there was a 38 year old former service E-1 in my platoon. He really had troubling keeping up but he was definitely game. American black guy. He had a family, maybe that was the best he could do. I sorta liked the guy. Definitely not a jerk.
He’s blick!!
To finish my thought, Ethiopia is about two-thirds Christian, one-third Islam, so this man could be either if he or his family are from Ethiopia.
Forget it, Jake. It’s Opossumtown.
Immigrant who arrived in US in his late 20s or 30s and joined the Navy?
“...as horrific as this tragedy was, if our diversity becomes a casualty, I think that’s worse.” General Casey after Ft Hood shooting.
I looked it up and Fantahun is definitely an Ethiopian name.
Ethiopian?
I made E-4 one month after turning 19. E-5 six months later, while I was still 19. E-6 was offered one month after I turned 20. MOS at that time was 32G.
“I made E-4 at age 19, and E-5 at 20.”
I made E-2 at 18, E-3 at 18 and E-2 at 19.
BTW, how do you manage to go from E-1 to E-4 in just over 1 year? I’m assuming you joined up on your 18th b’day but what about the necessary time in grade regulations?
Yeah, a little odd. I made Master Chief at 38. You can enlist as late as 35, and waivers are available for up to 39.
Article mentions no place of birth.
I'd put money on it that he never earned E-4 as much as they gave it to him just prior to the 10-year mark to avoid throwing him out of the service due to High Year Tenure. I saw more than one retirement of an E-4 who had a clean record and never lost even one stripe.
I’d be upset, too with a name like Pantaloon.
We had a 42 year old E-4 in my AIT Company. He had been an Active duty Captain who had gotten out. He wanted back in because of Vietnam. Within a couple months he left us as a Warrant Officer to be assigned as a Boat Captain in Nam.
That was kind of how I did it too. I was pretty proud of myself to make E-5 in my four year hitch...I guess that is good in a peacetime Navy.
Possibly Ethiopian or Somali?
When I was in (81-85, USAF) they seemed to be under pressure to kick out the deadwood before they hit 20 years.
(I made E-4 at age 19, and E-5 at 20.)
Same here flags.
The maximum age for first time enlistment in the Navy with no prior service is 34.
