Read this article with interest due to knowing a young couple experiencing this affliction during child birth. Then I found buried in what was supposed to be a medical interest story:

Although genetic factors may play a role, especially among Asian women, Jelliffe-Pawlowski and her team believe bias among providers coupled with the stresses of structural racism make women of color more susceptible to pregnancy complications.

Always comes down to being the white people's fault.

Those quarts of ice cream and pickles have nothing to do with this.

Over 50% of US millennials are fat, so this rise in gestational diabetes is no surprise.

Structural racism is the new climate change.

Pretty sure that 'type 2' diabetes was invented to sell Metformin.

Metformin was first used in 1927 (well before type 2 diabetes existed)

"It was rediscovered in the search for antimalarial agents in the 1940s and, during clinical tests, proved useful to treat influenza when it sometimes lowered blood glucose. This property was pursued by the French physician Jean Sterne, who first reported the use of metformin to treat diabetes in 1957"

Get the sugar out of what was once nutritional food, and diabetes will ‘magically’ disappear.

This isn’t a surprising result.
The war against meat has produced the idea that vegetarianism is trendy/good for you. Most vegetarians eat massive amounts of carbs. If they grew up this way they’re short and fat. Type 2 diabetes isn’t for the old anymore.

I expect the rates of both Type II and gestational diabetes are being affected by the pandemic response. A lot of people have been gaining weight during this period of relative inactivity in close proximity to the family kitchen.

Many are indeed eating an unhealthy diet high in refined carbohydrates. Raw and minimally processed vegetables are high in fiber, which is a good and necessary form of carbohydrate. Fiber doesn't sustain us though, since we can't digest it. High glycemic index foods like white rice and fruit juice can really spike blood sugar. They're vegetarian, but not so healthy in large proportions. I've always preferred a mostly vegetarian diet. Creating healthy vegetarian meals requires more knowledge and discipline than many people realize or accept. Healthy vegan eating is even more challenging.

I’m not sure if you are a medical doctor or not, but if you are you don’t know what you are talking about!

Due to a kidney problem (low kidney function), I became a vegan over five years ago. The vegan diet, along with a few other changes, improved my kidney problem significantly. I don’t eat meat but get my protein from a plant-based protein powder and eat primarily vegetables, fruits, and nuts. My weight is actually a little under normal for my height.

My daughter (a millennial) who is white, caucasian, and who never had a weight problem experienced diabetes during her pregnancy. After delivery, the problem went away. It is real and if it is racist it is racist against us white people, too. Where can I file a complaint?

My very seemingly healthy neighbor experienced this when she was pregnant - the doctor told her the diabetes was pregnancy-related and would most likely disappear once the baby was born.

Doctor was right - but the diabetes came roaring back shortly after the birth and she is now insulin dependent. She was told not to have more children, which depressed her greatly.

This was 10 years ago and she recently went back to the doctor b/c she felt so tired - doctor said her body was breaking down from the diabetes.

She is White so what is the excuse?

I couldn’t agree more. My son, mid-20s, realized he’d gained 20 lbs. during the lockdown - we are in lockdown central - California - so his gym was closed - coupled with an IT job that requires sitting in front of a computer for hours a day.

The gyms just opened again so he rejoined and was ecstatic to be returning, he also started a keto diet again - which works well for him. He knows it he doesn’t take care of the 20 lbs. now it could easily turn in to 30 or 40. Our family visits are now filled with walking, hiking and bike riding - we’ve all put on a bit of weight.

You’re right that eating correctly is a challenge for vegetarians. It’s not a natural diet for humans. Simply not eating meat and eating everything else is what most do. BTW - humans don’t need to eat carbohydrates. The body can create them out of proteins.

Sounds like she is doing a horrible job balancing her carb intake and her insulin dose.

Oh no, you’ve got to be kidding me. It can’t have anything to do with eating too many carbs and not doing some exercise. There is a major genetic component to type 2 diabetes, which is basically what gestational diabetes is. Blacks have a higher incidence of type 2 diabetes, but it has nothing to do with racism.

Also, as usual, the medical establishment is pushing the numbers lower and lower for what constitutes diabetes, so more and more people are being diagnosed as being diabetic. If they keep going lowering all these values, eventually 90% of the populace will be labeled as being diabetic, obese, and hypertensive.

The best thing for those who have a propensity for higher blood sugar is to cut the carbs and move around a lot. It’s that simple. I cringe when I see docs putting pregnant women on diabetes medications. I don’t think they have a clue as to what this might do to the developing baby.

Vegans are routinely thinner than vegetarians. And you have a medical conditional that requires a low protein diet.
Also while being overweight is associated with diabetes, it’s not in every case. Lots of people are simply genetically unable to handle a high carb load: they’re thin and diabetic. Type 2 is about isulin resistance that the body cannot overcome sometimes temporarily and sometimes permanently.

“Also while being overweight is associated with diabetes, it’s not in every case.”

I agree with your comment! I don’t know the numbers, but my guess is that the vast majority of type II diabetes is caused by overweight conditions (but not all). And diabetes is a major contributor to kidney failure. So, obesity is a big problem in this country and not just for diabetes and/or kidney failure.

In addition to vegan (which I agree is not for everyone), I put myself on a 1000 calorie diet. I did this primarily for my kidney issue, but overall calorie restriction seems to have many health benefits. Been doing this for many years and have my labs run at least every 3 months. So far, so good.
