Lamb leads bipartisan group pressing for $18 billion for state transportation agencies

WASHINGTON — A day after greeting President Joe Biden as he arrived near Pittsburgh to announce his infrastructure proposal, Rep. Conor Lamb, D-Mt. Lebanon, on Thursday led a bipartisan group of 46 other House lawmakers in pressing congressional leaders to dedicate another $18 billion in funding for state transportation agencies.

The lawmakers cited data from the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials that estimated state agencies will face a $28 billion budget shortfall by fiscal year 2024 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The spending bills passed by Congress in December allocated $10 billion, but the lawmakers called for the remaining $18 billion to be provided.

“This funding can put people to work immediately, without delay,” Mr. Lamb said in a statement accompanying the letter. “Summer is our region’s most productive construction season, and Congress must act now to get states the money they need to get these critical infrastructure projects back on track and more western Pennsylvanians back to work.”

The letter came as Congress gets to work assessing legislation that can be passed under Mr. Biden’s blueprint. While Democrats pledged to move forward without Republican votes, if necessary, the letter’s bipartisan signatures indicate the state funding issue is an area of compromise.

Mr. Lamb was joined by Rep. Bob Gibbs, R-Ohio, Salud Carbajal, D-Calif., and John Katko, R-N.Y., at the top of the letter.

Republicans have, by and large, been critical of federal funding for state and local governments, characterizing them as “bailouts” for poorly managed local budgets.

Mr. Gibbs stated that the pandemic had diminished fuel tax and toll road revenues that pay for state transportation projects — and that there was “bipartisan consensus” on this “targeted” spending.

Wake me up when the dems propose $17.5 billion for a mythical creature, fond of riddles, with the body of a lion, the wings of a bird, and a human head.

They’ve thrown money at everything else imaginable, so it can only be a matter of time.

Doesn’t PA already have one of the highest gas taxes in the country? What do they need more money for?

Highest gas taxes. Still have the crappiest roads and perpetual construction. I drive the PA Turnpike on the way to work. Now they have speed traps with cameras, so they can send you a ticket if you’re going more than 55 in a construction zone.

I believe that Lamb’s seat is one of the seats the rats stole in 2020.

Conor Lamb is a supposedly moderate Dumb-Dumb-O-Crat who won his seat in PA in 2018.

I think he stole it from Sean Parnell in 2020. I don’t think Lamb won without shenanigans.
