That’s why concealed is preferred. That should be the legal standard everywhere.
Every single tactical training course I’ve ever attended started with the instructor demonstrating how easy it is to disarm someone who isn’t paying attention. They stressed that criminals actively train for this stuff both inside and outside of prison. Awareness is your first defense with a proper carry holster a close second.
Another reason I carry concealed.....
My open carry holsters are retention type and all my holsters are retained by my belt.....
You always have to assume the worst.....
Let this man’s lesson serve to inform the rest of us...
Just different advantages and disadvantages.
Several concealed carriers have had pistols stolen, as well.
Much of it is in the execution.
Open carry should be done with retention in mind.
Open Carry only makes you a target on the streets.
I’m not so sure it was carefully planned or planned at all.......I’m mean how long does one go into a gas station for?
This was a crime of opportunity.
The open carry guy failed to put his arm down and protect his own weapon. He thought no one would do anything to him seeing his weapon.
I carry a backup .357 magnum snub nose revolver with whatever 9mm I’m carrying. There would have been shots fired for sure if I it was me.
Conceal carry is better. But some guys like to show off.
To each their own taste I guess.
Adding fuel to the fire of the debate between open carry vs concealed carry.
“ Open carry should be done with retention in mind.”
We are traveling to Louisiana in May. They don’t grant CCW permits to non residents and they don’t have reciprocity with IL. There’s no time to get a Utah permit, which is recognized in LA.
Open carry, however, is legal for me in that State. So I will be doing so where I feel it necessary.

What the public Anti-American indoctrination centers (uh, schools) didn't teach, the criminals learn in prison.
If they were such good students why did they flunk out in the fifth grade?
I believe people who carry openly are hoping it will be a deterrent to n’er do wells. It doesn’t always work that way. It also freaks out all the Karens. Best to carry concealed, IMO.
Retention and situational awareness is indeed critical. To clarify my statement, personal choice should prevail. I prefer concealed, personally. Concealed carry needs to be respected everywhere along with open carry (there seems to be a lot of open-carry jurisdictions - I’d say go with no restrictions.
Three thieves with a getaway car?
This doesn’t smell right.
Three guys?
Why not rob a bunch of old ladies and buy a pistol?
This is way too much effort to steal one pistol.
Something is off.
The real key is not to go to places where this can happen...like Detroit
I think you are imparting too much intellect/rationality to these crazy drug addled folks committing the crime.
Open or concealed, this is still true:
A man wrote a suicide note and left it on the kitchen table for his family, and then walked unarmed at night into the City of Detroit.
A confederate held the store door open. It was unclear if there was another confederate in the getaway vehicle. What were all these southerners doing in Detroit?
Assuming the worst means that you assume that bad guys know about retention holsters, and know how to remove a gun from one.
Assume gang members routinely practice with each other on how to grab a gun from all the standard police retention holsters.
Open carry should be reserved for active civil unrest scenarios where you have buddies with you and will not allow non-trusted people to get close enough to make a grab.
I think they were “tourists” from Chicago...
It may be added drama by the writer.
Gas stations in the City of Detroit are known hang outs for criminals and activity.
Steal purses left in the car when the woman goes into the gas station.
Steal cars, even as the gas is being pumped.
The perps hang out and wait for something to come along.
Most people get gas in Detroit ONLY if they have to.
It’s best to keep your wheels rolling than stopping in the neighborhood gas station.
