That’s a good layout of possible scenarios.
My first thought is, any ex-DOJ official who is trying to shake-down a U.S. Congressman is going to be smart enough not to have explicit demands recorded or a part of a paper trail.
In fact, I tend to lean toward the side of this story where this is all intentional, well timed, and meant to attack Gaetz for things he may be involved in.
Why?
Don’t forget the model that was best excemplified by FusionGPS. It was a group of media/press people and lawyers formed for the purpose of attacking people on political grounds. With the way that everything seems to be getting politically weaponized these days, I would not be suprised at all if this ex-DOJ ‘official’ is apart of a larger conspiracy to attack Gaetz.

Lots of people were saying that maybe Trump did some stuff in Moscow but it probably wasn’t all that bad.
Actually, NONE of it was true. It was a complete, utter fabrication.
But the damage was done, and the phony BS story had been sowed, and people said “well maybe...”.

Gaetz is one of their worst nightmares: an up and comer who doesn’t back down, thinks on his feet.
Barr and the rest of the Gang Enforcers needed a phony meme to go after him, now we see what it is.
Barr and Wray are the problems, and the guys they worked with like Mueller, Comey and Weissman are just part of the same gangster state muscle group. Threats to their little enterprise are always identified early and then taken out with outrageous garbage. Remember Vickie Sweat, the sleaze broad who accused Kavanaugh of outright rape, only to admit later that she had never met him, didn’t know where he lived, anything about him, it was all just riffin’?
