ALFRED, Maine — A man charged with fatally beating his son's mother at Short Sands Beach in York is set to make his first appearance in court Tuesday.

Jeffrey Buchannan, 33, of Bedford, Massachusetts, is charged with killing Rhonda Pattelena, 35, in a public attack that police described as a case of domestic violence. The horrific scene unfolded behind a rock on the beach, prompting multiple 911 calls to York police on Friday.

Video surveillance footage from a nearby business appears to have recorded the alleged assault.

Pattelena was already dead when police arrived; an autopsy concluded she died from blunt force trauma to the head. The child wasn't present during the attack, police said.

This probably will not get any national attention because the man that beat this woman to death is African American.

The woman beat to death was Caucasian.

The man who killed her was African American.

Never mentioned anywhere in the article.

...murder suspect claims he 'blacked out.'

I don't think Buchannan's "Blacked Out" means what Camille Fine thinks it means.

Why does the article say ‘his son’s mother’ and not ‘his wife’ or his ex-girlfriend? Seems an odd way to put it.

I believe it is possible to “black out” like this at times.

I worked with a man who had a hot temper. He told me of an experience in the Navy when they wanted to get him to start controlling his temper. They put him in a boxing ring.

His sparing partner was a black man, and when he came out of the corner the partner hit him lightly on the chin. Next thing he knew was he was on the canvas with several sailors holding him down. He had no recollection of what happened after he was lightly hit.

This is what happened: He was lightly hit in the chin, his gloved hands went down between his knees, and he pulled his hands right out of the gloves. His hand went to his pocket and out came a switch blade knife and he was chasing the black boxer around the ring with the knife. “Swish! swish! swish” with the knife!

Others grabbed him, got him down and then he recovered from his blind rage.

I’ve known others who could get drunk and “black out” not remembering anything they did. Get them drunk again and their memory comes back. They were very dangerous, drunk or sober.

And they say pot can affect memory. It might, but nothing like alcohol is capable of doing.☺

Or he could be just trying to not spend the next 30+ years in a ME prison.

She was a rabid BLM supporter, probably because of her “love” of this fellow. He is a narcissist.

Come to Maine for vacation, stay a life time. The guy is now going to be a drain on the taxpayers of Maine when he did not even live here. We should bill Massachusetts for court and incararation costs.
