German leaders meet as some regions halt AstraZeneca for those under-60s

BERLIN (AP) — Several German regions again suspended AstraZeneca shots on Tuesday for people under 60 after new reports of unusual blood clots, prompting Chancellor Angela Merkel to call an urgent meeting about the continued use of the coronavirus vaccine.

The news is the latest blow to the vaccine, which is critical to Europe’s immunization campaign and a linchpin in the global strategy to get shots to poorer countries. It comes less than two weeks after the EU drug regulator said the vaccine does not increase the overall incidence of blood clots following a similar scare. The European Medicines Agency said at the time that the benefits of vaccination outweigh the risk, but it could not rule out a link between the shot and some unusual kinds of clots and recommended adding a warning about possible rare side effects.

Authorities in Berlin, Munich, Brandenburg state and the country's biggest, North Rhine-Westphalia, made the decision to temporarily halt vaccinations for younger people after the country’s medical regulator said it had received additional reports of an unusual form of blood clot in the head, known as sinus vein thrombosis, in recent recipients of the AstraZeneca vaccine. All together, those areas are home to almost a third of the German population.

The Paul Ehrlich Institute said a total of 31 such blood clots were reported by March 29 out of some 2.7 million doses of AstraZeneca that have been administered across the whole of Germany so far. Nine of the people died and all but two of the cases involved women, who were aged 20 to 63, it said.

The suspensions come as Germany, along with other European countries, is scrambling to ramp up its vaccine program, which lags far behind those in Britain and the United States.

And for those who don't remember....

Use of the AstraZeneca vaccine was temporarily halted in several European countries earlier this month over concerns about the rare blood clots. After a review by medical experts at the European Medicines Agency, most European Union countries, including Germany, resumed use of the vaccine on March 19.

Nils Anders Tegnell is a Swedish civil servant and physician specialising in infectious disease explained that the decision was one of risk-cost benefit. Younger people must weigh the risks of side effects with the risk posed by the disease, and make a choice. “If you are under 50-55 years old, the risks are very small when it comes to the disease, so then maybe you should think about the risk-benefit balance.”

As each day passes, I become more and more convinced it’ll never get an emergency use authorization here in the United States.

By this summer, I expect we’ll have Pfizer, Moderna, J&J, and Novavax. Nobody else seems close to the finish line. The AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine seemed to be way ahead of everyone back in July/August, but then all the problems in their trials came to light (they couldn’t even give people the right doses at the right times). Now with some lingering safety issues and even more problems discovered in the US clinical trials, I can’t imagine that thing sees the light of day in the US.

Cancel the contracts for fraud. Get back the Operation Warp Speed money from them. The others all used that money well and came up with great products. AZ/Oxford appears to have wasted our time and money either through negligence, incompetence, or outright fraud.

These are not the causes of blood clots you are looking for.

59, no. But once you turn 60, it’s magically ok. That’s one smart fake vaccine.

Can I take the vaccine if I am 59 and 364 days?

“all but two of the cases involved women”

It came out during investigation of the earlier blood clot brouhaha by the European Medicines Agency, that these blood clotting and platelet issues were known side effects of birth control drugs.

But that is not politically correct to say out loud.

There are trial lawyers in the EU who make their (very opulent) living from suing Governments over vaccines, just as there are here. They prefer to promote a different story - one that will make them rich, like they hit the lottery.

Trump’s fault /s

Astra-Zeneca and Sanofi were the only vaccine candidates pre-ordered by the EU. The Sanofi vaccine turned out to be an ineffective dud while Astra-Zeneca has safety issues, e.g. blood clotting. President Trump's Operation Warp Speed, by contrast, pre-ordered multiple vaccine candidates: Pfizer/BioNTech, Moderna, Johnson & Johnson, and Novavax, along with Astra-Zeneca and Sanofi.

Three of the Warp Speed candidates have now delivered with safe and effective vaccines, versus zero for the EU and Germany. A fourth, Novavax, is likely to seek Emergency Use Approval in May.

Operation Warp Speed pre-ordered earlier in the developmental process and did a better job, percentage wise, in selecting promising candidates than the EU.

Operation Warp Speed was one (of many) of President Trump's great accomplishments. IMHO it shaved off at least 1 year, and possibly 2, from the start of a mass vaccination campaign against the Red China virus.

even more problems discovered in the US clinical trials,

What problems? AX were rapped over the knuckles for prematurely announcing the results of the latest USA/Brazil trials before all figures were complete. They've now corrected this, with only trivial variations in the results. That premature announcement was an understandable reaction to a lot of negative publicity in Europe, partly political (Macron in particular dissing AZ out of little more than post-Brexit spite), partly the excessive European application of the precautionary principal which led to the various suspensions following the blood-clotting investigations. None of the investigations has yet found any evidence of a causal link between the vaccine and those incidents, nor are they statistically anomalous.

Meanwhile, 52% of the British adult population (24 million) have now been vaccinated, most with AZ (though also a good number of Pfizer) without any serious alarms.

There's a further feature of the anti-AZ publicity: it seems likely that it's been stoked behind the scenes by some of the rival manufacturers, unhappy with the fact that the AZ alone has been produced on a not-for-profit basis, and is thus selling at about $3 a shot (compared with c. $35 for eg Moderna). The low cost, together with its ease of transport and storage (doesn't require the special low-temperature facilities of eg Pfizer) mean that there's huge world-wide demand from poorer countries. AZ's problem is that it hasn't yet been able to scale up quickly enough to meet the demand. It's that underlying problem which triggered the puerile EU/UK vaccine export tussle.

“By this summer, I expect we’ll have Pfizer, Moderna, J&J, and Novavax.”

That should be plenty to do the job.

Canada and Mexico have both been using AZ, so they could potentially make use of the tens of millions of doses already waiting authorization in inventory in the USA.

Apparently, AZ has been very effective in driving down COVID in the UK. Lots of other non-EU Countries have been using it as well - Australia, India, Argentina, Indonesia, Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan, Uzbekistan, Congo, Kenya, Morocco, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, etc., etc. - all over. Every continent (except maybe Antarctica, but the Brits have a base there, so probably).

With the vaccine deaths and adverse events already reported IMHO none will be legitimately approved and licensed by the FDA.

There have been zero deaths causally linked to any COVID-19 vaccine in either the US or the UK.

The data in VAERS is not evidence of any causal relationship. VAERS tells you that directly. If you get a polio shot today and die a week from now in a car accident, that gets entered into VAERS by law. The polio vaccine didn’t cause the death.

The latest was their use of outdated data in their reporting, which was so egregious that NIAID felt the need to publish a public statement about it. But their trials in both the UK and the US have been riddled with process and procedure issues.

I’m absolutely in favor of the Trump vaccines, which are doing remarkable things and helping to ensure the safety of hundreds of millions of people. However, I don’t want Americans given anything that hasn’t been properly vetted. The other vaccines had solid clinical trials with stellar results. Frankly, I think AZ/Oxford should be forced to re-run their entire Phase 3 clinical trial in the US if they want an EUA, but that’s not up to me.

If you look back at my posts from August/September, you’ll see I was all in favor of the AZ/Oxford vaccine and happily predicting it would be the first one available in the US. Early results were very promising. Now the waters are so muddied, I’m not sure anyone knows exactly how safe or effective it really is.

“these blood clotting and platelet issues were known side effects of birth control drugs”

Then why haven’t we seen similar cases of blood clots with women taking all the other vaccines?

Of course, no deaths linked to the vaccines even the fellow that died 25 minutes after taking the vaccine because after all he made it through the required first 15 minutes.

BS!

“Operation Warp Speed was one (of many) of President Trump’s great accomplishments.”

Amen.

The Merck candidate vaccine also dropped out (as well as the Sanofi). Diversifying across several technologies, with two world class pharmaceutical companies competing on each technical approach, was a wise and winning strategy.

Are you saying that you believe these highly expieremental “vaccines” have been fully vetted and are safe? Why the extraordinary and unusual effort to track the side effects of those who have been vaccinated?

https://stateofthenation.co/?p=32606

“During an interview with the Wall Street Journal published last Friday, the “captain” of Operation Warp Speed, career Big Pharma executive Moncef Slaoui, confirmed that the millions of Americans who are set to receive the project’s Covid-19 vaccine will be monitored via “incredibly precise . . . tracking systems” that will “ensure that patients each get two doses of the same vaccine and to monitor them for adverse health effects.” Slaoui also noted that tech giants Google and Oracle have been contracted as part of this “tracking system” but did not specify their exact roles beyond helping to “collect and track vaccine data.”

All deaths are investigated. Zero investigations thus far have indicated that a COVID-19 vaccine caused a particular death. That’s the simple fact.

Hank Aaron was supposed to have died from the vaccine. That’s what all the anti-vaxxers were screaming about. They were convinced it was the cause. Only problem is that the medical examiner who actually investigated his death stated explicitly that there was no evidence of any vaccine reaction, nor that any vaccine played any role in his death, and that the cause of death was entirely consistent with his known and documented medical history.

Marvin Hagler was supposed to have died from a COVID-19 vaccine. All the anti-vaxxers kept screaming about it being another COVID-19 vaccine death. They were convinced it was the cause. Only problem is that his family - including his wife - stated that he died at home of natural causes.

Every time some supposed example has come up, an actual investigation has shown it had nothing to do with a COVID-19 vaccine. So I say again: to date, there have been zero deaths causally linked to a COVID-19 vaccine in either the US or the UK. Zero. None. Not a single one.

Maybe one day there will be. But not so far.
