Interesting question. They decided that to be taken seriously, and to make their own foreign policy, they needed not one, but two super carriers. They turned out (I’m shocked!) to cost way more than expected. Then, after several changes of government and shifting priorities, to finish the carriers they basically had to park the rest of the fleet. So, they have two super carriers that they can’t sail anywhere because, well, without the escort ships they’d be sitting ducks. This caused then PM, Theresa May, to propose to Trump that they integrate the British carriers into the American fleet. Which, means Britain can no longer have a foreign policy different than the US policy; exactly the opposite of what the British wanted. Sometimes the irony just hurts.
