Minnesota state representative Jeremy Munson (R-Crystal Lake) introduced a bill, HF2243, Thursday that would allow Minnesota counties to secede from the state and join South Dakota.
The legislation would start the process to allow Minnesota counties to join a neighboring state. Under the bill, a Minnesota county would be able to apply to U.S. Congress to amend the state’s boundaries.
“State lines have been relocated many times in American history because it just takes an interstate compact between two state legislatures and the approval of Congress,” Munson said on his website.

Good idea if you care about your 2nd Amendment rights.
Interesting idea.
Counties in California and Oregon should maybe join Nevada.
What a great idea. That means I could live in Idaho without moving!
Now we are starting get somewhere! More of this!
Somebody made a typo in the bill. It says the other parts of Minnesota with Omar’s district can now become a province of China in absentia. Or in extremis. Or something. Commieville.
Actually there is a greater Idaho Movement
Let this happen everywhere.
Let the Western counties of Virginia decide to become part of NC, WV or Tenn.
Pretty soon there’d be nothing but small blue islands in a sea of Red
Actually, this is much more feasible than the various plans over the decades to form new states.
This would also realign House apportionment, as SD would almost certainly gain a district, and MN lose one.
Yes, Minnesota shares a border with South Dakota....Sioux Falls is right over the border while traveling west on I-90.
Even if by some miracle this got thru the legislature, what are the odds the DFL governor would sign it?
It’s a great idea!
New England states become one, everything west toga the Hudson, including NYC.N. Calif. becomes Jefferson.
The problem with the bill is that Mn voters have to approve them leaving and Congress has to approve it. A Dem Congress will never approve it because they will love the electoral votes based on the counties population to a Republican state. They will have to wait until the Republicans control Congress if they are to have a chance. Nor do I think heavily Democrat Minnesota voters will approve, particularly in Minneapolis.
South Dakota is red enough. Unless there’s a 2nd congressional seat that goes with it it’s better to put up a fight where they are.
It starts th process, looking ahead to 2022 and/or 2024 election results changing the Dem stranglehold in MN & DC.
Have to begin early, and follow the Dem lead of bringing it up on every possible voting opportunity, until it passes.
A traveler who never takes the first step never arrives.
How about 2-3 more seats in Congress?
Campaign on it and defeat democrats in next election?
And that’s why MN won’t agree to it. Dims don’t give up any aspect of political power.
About 20 years ago I interviewed with a large financial services firm in Sioux Falls. The opportunity was interesting, but the location was not. I asked one interviewer about life in Sioux Falls, using the classical question: “What do people where do on weekends?” The immediate response was “Oh, there are tons of flights to the Twin Cities.”
