Only because it became clear to me we had no intention of winning the damn thing.
There were legitimate reasons to defend South Vietnam, but no defense for how the war was carried out - a waste of American lives and far more for the people of South Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.
This guy imitating the anti-government Buddhist monks of South Vietnam would have been shocked by what the communists in Cambodia did to their Buddhist monks - they killed them or drove them into exile in an attempt to erase Buddhism.
“Only because it became clear to me we had no intention of winning the damn thing.”
We were in there because we signed a treaty with the French so when they backed out, we had to step in. We were never in there to win. It was a policing action just like Korea. We didn’t win there either. We haven’t had an actual war with the intent of the destruction of the enemy since WW II ending in the mid forties. Everything we have done downrange has been to oppose and neutralize, not defeat. And that includes the middle east and South America.
In Vietnam we were also in Laos, Cambodia. Thailand, and North Vietnam.
In South American we have been active from Guatamala to Peru and Argentina. And of course, Mexico. And it is increasing. Two of the facilities soon to be available to the U.S. are located in the Caribbean region – the military port in Cartagena and the air base in Malambo – and will serve the needs of the U.S. Navy. We aren’t fighting actual wars like WW II. We are fighting other’s civil wars and have for over 70 years.
