To mark the premiere of Fox Nation's new special, "The Attempted Assassination of Ronald Reagan," former White House Advance Planner Rick Ahearn joined "Your World" Tuesday to reflect on the shooting of the 40th president by John Hinckley 40 years ago next week.

Despair that Hinckley didn't have a better aim...
It certainly greased the skids for his legislation in Congress.
Surviving an assassination attempt with courage and good humor tends to garner lots of public support.
“I hope you doctors are Republicans”
To Nancy:
“Honey I forgot to duck”
TV show Greatest American Hero had
character Mr Hinckley...changed to
just Mr H to avoid same last name as
shooter
3-30-81, was in my college radio
station and the old UPI teletype started going very active, printing out
bulletins
Robert Wanko is the baddest badass who ever badassed.
Different world back then. The hate was there but the assassination attempt gave them pause. Saw it myself in downtown NYC.
Today, they’d be celebrating in the streets if it happened to President Trump.
Considering this was prior to the internet and cable news (CNN) was in its infancy and not nearly as partisan as it is today, it’s tough to answer that.
I was in high school and my recollection is that it was a somber period and most of the people on TV were sober and restrained focused more on Reagan’s condition and how that impacted the country and less on the issue of guns or scoring other political points.
Really, the only controversial, contentious aspect of that entire shooting was when Alexander Haig claimed he was in charge. That ruffled some feathers.
A lot of liberals were celebrating when Ronnie was shot back then.... There were rumors of an ABC station breaking into cheers when the news hit the wire that he’d been shot... Things are worse now but libs have always been evil
Didn’t Haig say that at a presser? Bush was in TX at the time correct?
“Wait, you said Jodie Foster is a what?”
Of course nobody talks about any great conspiracy theories about the assassination attempt like they do with JFK.
Yes, IIRC he said it in the White House briefing room. I honestly can’t remember where Bush was, but he definitely wasn’t in DC.
I’ll never forget watching Ronnie walk into the hospital on his own steam supported by a couple of SS. What a hero he was! I still miss him.
From an attempted assassination having a profound effect on us all to a mean tweet from Trump is the worst thing ever.
Frankly, the libs were just as shocked as conservatives.
40 years ago makes me old. I remember where I was when it happened. Remember where I was when JFK was assassinated.
This event turned Jody Foster into a Lesbian.
The next morning actress Lee Grant was on ABC’s GOOD MORNING AMERICA and screamed...
“THE NRA IS A RIFLE ORGANIZATION! THEY SHOULD GIVE UP THEIR HANDGUNS AND THEY CAN KEEP THEIR RIFLES!”
Now they are after the rifles.
I remember ABC’s FRANK REYNOLDS reporting this.
In the newsroom it was mentioned the handgun had been bought in DALLAS TEXAS!
Reynolds threw his hands in the air and yelled...”A-G-G-H! DALLAS!”
(memories of the John Kennedy murder in Dallas 1963)
I remember seeing the first press conference after this happened. One woman reporter jumped up and asked..”Do you think there was a conspiracy!”
The answer was that they had no evidence of a conspiracy.
Even after Reagan was shot he still had a sense of humor.
“Honey, I forgot to duck.”
