Estimating the Number of Illegal Immigrants Who Might Get COVID Relief Payments

During the debate over the Covid relief bill Sen. Durbin (D-IL) stated that "Undocumented immigrants do not have Social Security numbers, and they do not qualify for stimulus relief checks." This is incorrect; we estimate that there are 2.65 million illegal immigrants who have Social Security numbers...illegal immigrants could receive an estimated $4.38 billion in cash payments from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

Most of these checks will go to illegal immigrants who have obtained valid Social Security numbers through DACA, through Temporary Protected Status (TPS), and through asylum claims. Also, these folks have 1.1 million USA-born dependent children.

That money if they are truly poor illegals, will trickle into the economy, like Niagara falls. And the lines at home depot of those looking for work will be shorter for a few days.

Everyone knows about Social Security identity theft.

Estimating how many of them will receive a check is not possible.

The IRS issues the COVID checks.

If you do not file a tax return - and most illegals do not - you have to file a special application to get your C-check.

Will there be some fraud? Of course.

Massive fraud?

Seems unlikely - most people with fraudulent SS cards are not going to tell the IRS where they live or what their bank account routing number is.
