Cambridge is the second city in the state, after its neighbor Sommerville, legally to recognize polyamory.

Where does a city get the legal power to do this?

What are the legal responsibilities and entanglements of the people involved in this relationship?

In a normal marriage there is community property, the right to provide insurance to your spouse through employer provided insurance, retirement pass through to a spouse, SS survivor pension and other things. How can these go to more than one individual?

Obviously, a city does not have the power to change these things.
