“Don’t countries pull their ambassador just before an attack?”

No. Admiral Kichisaburo Nomura, the Japanese ambassador to the US visited Secretary of State Cordell Hull to deliver an ultimatum on December 7th, 1941. He was unaware of the Japanese attack that morning on Pearl Harbor. Many of the various ambassadors in the European war tried to remain at their posts, but most were evicted by the Germans. Historically, the ambassadors from belligerent countries are ordered to leave. But, they are not arrested. The Germans held the British ambassador and his staff until the German ambassador returned home, then they allowed the ambassador and his staff to leave.

I have, on several occasions, worked for a boss who was like Biden. One was suffering severe dementia. I was quite often put on the spot by people in the companies we dealt with over insane things he had done. I always tried to do whatever I could to even things out and it was made easier by the fact that the people insulted or slighted or who had lost money because of him actually understood what was happening. I suspect that’s the case here.

But if it gets too bad, I’d imagine we will see a few ambassadors resign.

I had a bad boss once, or more precisely he was my boss's boss. Fortunately, I got myself out of the home office so didn't have to directly deal with growing insanity like my boss did.

The guy was a big corporate golden boy so his growing insanity was covered up during the growing crash then buried deep later. He had a cocaine habit. Bad bad business decisions that drove our subsidiary out of business. Several hundred people lost their jobs. The bad boss went into rehab then disappeared and the event erased from corporate memory.

I was the last person formally assigned to to subsidiary. Literally, I was 1000 miles removed from the insanity working within another subsidiary. Corporate wanted to lay me off to complete the erasure but the prez of the subsidiary I was with told corporate hands off and retained me in his organization.

So, Biden is about as incompetent and irrational as that past bad boss. I've seen this play before.
