I’d say that the heart of Jordan B. Peterson’s latest Beyond Order: 12 More Rules for Life is “Rule XI: Do Not Allow Yourself to Become Resentful, Deceitful, or Arrogant.” It contains the Sleeping Beauty story that you can read at Quillette. Sleeping Beauty, sleepwalking through college, is being pursued by the Evil Queen, her stepmother, who calls her up three times a day to tear a strip off her.
What is the point? The point is, according to Peterson, that there are six archetypes -- as in Jung -- that are going to define your life: “a hero and an adversary; a wise king and a tyrant; a positive and negative maternal figure,” and then there is chaos itself. We would all like to live in an ordered world with only heroes, wise kings, and nurturing mothers, but that isn’t the real world. The real world is always threatening chaos, as in the Dragon of Chaos. You can’t just curl up into a ball to hide from the Evil Queen, you have to learn to deal with her. You have got to do something about it.
Now I like Peterson because his ideas fit into my reductive Three Peoples theory, that there are three kinds of people in the world, Creatives, Responsibles, and Subordinates -- and always will be. Thus I experience his 12 Rules and Beyond Order as an instruction manual for becoming a Responsible and maybe a responsible Creative.
And Peterson has inspired me to learn Nietzsche and Jung end-to-end: good Germans.

For those not familiar with Jordan Peterson, he is worth spending some time listening to. I’ll warn that he can be wordy. He is a university professor after all. And ultimately, he’s worth the modest time investment.
Watch the full Cathy Newman interview. This is what seems to have really brought the larger public to him.

In which he pleasantly, professionally eviscerates a 3rd wave feminist newsy. And she’s so clueless she doesn’t even understand what is happening.
His criticisms of the Postmodernists in our universities are spot on. He sees them as the heirs of the Communists, which they are, and who he hates, having read his Solzhenitsyn. And he has a huge following of Millenial and Gen Z men. This is a good thing.

FReepers should know who JP is, he is an ally.

I’m in agreement the Jordan Peterson phenomenon (while he isn’t conservative) really highlights a serious problem with the conservative movement, and that is there are few courageous voices that have a thorough understanding and background in these fields who speak out.
I love Jordan Peterson.....he has taken us on quite the journey, and has been on one himself. Currently he is in a good deal of pain, most of the time, and needs prayer.
Nothing to figure out.
He’s an atheist who is finding God.
And that is that there is a dragon in life that you will need to slay but you will find that the dragon lives inside yourself, not outside and certainly not in others.
And the biggest lesson of all: you cannot slay the dragon but are doomed to wrestle with him all your life. As you wrestle with the dragon you will get stronger and stronger, but so will the dragon.
As you fight the dragon, you will both mature and grow.
That's true, I hope, but that doesn't explain why he is a phenomenon.
Of interest.
Any academic NOT blaming all of the world’s ills on white hetero males is different. An academic that correctly critiques the stiffing anti - intellectual envrinoment of a modern US college campus by pointing out the flaws in all of the participants... well, that’s a unicorn. Unicorns get noticed.
That's gonna make him famous.

Thanks, Rooster....but I beat ya! lol
I used to listen to him until he called Auschwitz an example of ‘’right wing extremism’’.
He’s full of it on that one.
Heheh. You did. Proves that I should read the thread before commenting.
He is a smart guy, but if you’re comparing his essential beliefs to the Ten Commandments or the Beatitudes he reads like Ethics By Rube Goldberg. Keep it Simple.
Just for the record, Jung is Swiss.
He misses it every now and then. He did on Kavanaugh too. He’s not infallible, but he’s a good ally.
I’d love to have the Nazis as right wing chat with him. That’s been a Leftist Big Lie since the 1940s. Many have bought into it. See the Hayek quote on my FR profile page, he nailed it at the time. 3rd one down.
But a German-speaking, culturally German Swiss.
What’s more important in that part of the world, culture or nationality? It’s not necessarily an easy question.
The “Quillette” article linked in original is pretty darn interesting as well: https://quillette.com/2021/03/07/for-our-own-good-we-all-need-a-glimpse-of-the-evil-queen/
On a separate tack, it’s interesting to me how Rush Limbaugh and Jordan Peterson - both of whom became prominent skeptics of much of contemporary life, though in very different ways - both got hooked on drugs initially administered legitimately as standard therapeutics, and how the consequences of those addictions were subsequently used against them by their enemies and critics. Thankfully both overcame those problems, much to their credit and individual fortitude.
